**Tutor instruction** **Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases in the EU and WHO-Euro** **EPH 1022** **Academic year 2024-2025** Dear tutors, thank for agreeing to be part of this course! EPH1022 is a second course in the first year of bachelor EPH. It aims to introduce students to the different types of diseases and familiarize them with biomedical terminology about health and illness. Although we do not expect that students gain deep understanding of the biological and medical complexities of diseases, we expect that this course will introduce them to the different angles of public health and different forms of knowledge and practices that exist in this arena. To assure the quality of this course, we would like to ask you to provide us with feedback and suggestions on how the course is running and how students are learning the materials We will schedule tutor meetings each week to address questions and discuss the learning activities in the course. **Under no circumstances share this tutor guide with students!** **Instructions for the tutorial group meetings** The tutorial groups will consist of 9-12 students and 1 tutor. The student is allowed to miss maximum 25% (3 tutorials) of the mandatory meetings with giving one\'s reasons for missing. S/he must inform the tutor before the meeting starts. If the student does not want to tell the tutor the reason because of privacy reasons, they must contact the study advisor. In addition, if a student is present but cannot actively participate because of special circumstances, they must inform the tutor before the meeting starts or because of privacy reasons contact the study advisor. If students cannot come to the tutorial, they have to make a compensatory assignment. For compensatory assignment, you can ask students to send you a summary of the literature for the case that they are missing. You can ask that they send this summary to you and to the rest of the group before the meeting so that their summary can be included into the group's notes. The explanation regarding the compensatory assignment can also be found in the syllabus. Just so you know: - In case you need a substitution for your tutorial, please reach out to the coordinator -- Alena Kamenshchikova or Mark Bakker (co-coordinator) - Students can share their questions/concerns with you, the coordinators, their mentors, with student advisors, or ask askfhml (depending on the type of question or concern they have). Students will have all the contact information from the syllabus. - At the end of the syllabus, students have an additional exercise that they can use by themselves or in groups in order to systematize their knowledge from the course and help them prepare for the exam. You may highlight it for them at the end of the course. **\ ** **As this document is quite long, we added a clickable menu so you can have an easier navigation:** [Regarding the assignment "Counting Health: European Country Profiles" 2](#regarding-the-assignment-counting-health-european-country-profiles) [Case 1: "Hygiene, New Public Health, Communicable & NCD" 4](#case-1-hygiene-new-public-health-communicable-ncd) [Case 2: Epidemiological changes in Europe 8](#case-2-epidemiological-changes-in-europe) [Case 3: Hepatitis B and C 21](#case-3-hepatitis-b-and-c) [Case 4: HIV and HIV care across Europe 29](#case-4-hiv-and-hiv-care-across-europe) [Case 5: Vaccination and vaccine hesitancy 42](#case-5-vaccination-and-vaccine-hesitancy) [Case 6: "The role of ECDC and WHO/Europe in preventing communicable and non-communicable diseases" 48](#case-6-the-role-of-ecdc-and-whoeurope-in-preventing-communicable-and-non-communicable-diseases) [Case 7: Pandemic preparedness and response in the European Union 53](#case-7-pandemic-preparedness-and-response-in-the-european-union) [Case 8: Cancer 59](#case-8-cancer) [Case 9: lifestyle related diseases 63](#case-9-lifestyle-related-diseases) [Case 10: Mental health as a contemporary public health issue 70](#case-10-mental-health-as-a-contemporary-public-health-issue) [Case 11: Sleeping problems: disorder or determinant? 77](#case-11-sleeping-problems-disorder-or-determinant) [Case 12: Antimicrobial resistance as a bio-social phenomenon 81](#case-12-antimicrobial-resistance-as-a-bio-social-phenomenon) [Case 13: One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance 85](#case-13-one-health-approach-to-antimicrobial-resistance) **Regarding the assignment "Counting Health: European Country Profiles"** ========================================================================= The Epidemiology and Statistics assignment in EPH1022 builds on the contents in this course and on the Epidemiology and Statistics SCLs in period 1. Students, in small groups, need to prepare an oral presentation (with a limited number of slides) comparing the health status of three countries from different regions in Europe. The assignment will be introduced by two lectures on October 28 and November 19 with information on the epidemiological and statistical background and a general introduction to the assignment. More information will be available in an extensive training manual published on Canvas. In the first tutorial group, students need to form subgroups. Based on the number of students in each group, you can make the following subgroups: 5-8 students \--\> form two subgroups 9+ students \--\> form three subgroups. Students have a pass for the assignment (from a previous year) do not have to participate in a subgroup. The pass remains valid The students have to arrange a meeting in the first week to choose: - a disease (infectious disease, cancer, other non-communicable disease), - a relevant health determinant related to the disease (e.g. smoking prevalence and mortality of lung cancer or prevalence of vaccination and death related to infectious diseases), and - three countries from different European regions. and to make working arrangements. This training manual provides detailed information regarding the possible diseases, countries, health determinants and useful databases. Each subgroup has to inform Lavienja Schreurs by mail () before Monday 4 November with the following information: names and IDs of the students, the chosen disease, health determinant and countries. Please check every week the progress of the subgroups in the tutorial group meeting. Focus on the collaboration and progress. Please refer questions regarding the contents to the coordinators of the assignment. A consultation session for each subgroup is planned on Tuesday 26^th^ of November (this will be online and Zoom-links and a time schedule will be published on Canvas). On Wednesday the 11^th^ of December the subgroup will present their work to the fellow students and teaching staff in two-hour sessions. **\>\>\>\>\> Please note: the tutors are expected to be present in the presentation session of their tutor group on the 11^th^ of December to ask questions, provide feedback and assist in the assessment of the presentations. Instructions will be sent \
