Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Why Is Engineering Ethics Important? People rely heavily on engineers to provide them with safe and reliable goods and services. Engineers must perform under a certain standard of professional behavior which requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct. Mistakes made by unethical and/or incompetent engineers could cost not only money but also more importantly lives. © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Laws: a system of rules and punishments clearly defined and established by a society to maintain a safe and orderly social environment. © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Discussion Questions What does it mean to be ethical? Is it something to do with right and wrong? In what sense? How does that apply to what we actually do? Should Ethics depend on a situation or are they absolute? Are personal and professional ethics the same thing? When we declare that something is right or wrong, is that true in our career as well as in our personal life? What ethics means for Engineers? Why are we talking about engineering ethics? © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Observations About Ethics We all have a moral compass. A way to decide if something is right or wrong. You can call it gut feel. It comes from our socialization side. We all prefer to Do what we believe is the Right Thing. Sometimes, doing the Right Thing can be challenging. This is what is called an Ethical Dilemma. © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Observations About Ethics (Cont.) It is easy to slip on the ethical slope. It is easy to recognize that we failed to meet up to our ethical standards. However, in order to not feel bad about ourselves we adjust our ethical standards instead of trying to improve our behavior (that’s a common thing). Ethical conflicts as well might be hidden. You may not even realize that there’s a decision between right and wrong going on here in any given situation. So, being aware of that is important. © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli What is an Ethical Dilemma? 1. A situation in which there is a choice to be made between options, none of which resolve the situation in an ethically acceptable fashion. The classical example of this is the trolley car coming down the track and you’re at a switch: switch ? If the car goes straight it’s going to kill a few people. But if you redirect it, it will now kill just one or fewer people. Do you take action to reduce the harm recognizing that your action will still cause harm? © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli What is an Ethical Dilemma? (Cont.) 2. A situation with an apparent conflict between personal imperative, in which obeying one would result in transgressing another. Personal imperatives include safety, job security, financial security, planning for the future, ethics, etc. We know what is right and wrong, but the wrong thing is much better for us in many personal ways and so dealing with that decision is the ethical dilemma. © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Ethical Dilemma Questions When you are in a situation where there is a potential conflict you’ve been able to identify as an ethical dilemma or even to help you identify if it’s an ethical dilemma, ask yourself: Who will be helped by the decision you make? Who will be harmed by it? Does the decision violates anyone’s rights, break promises, or undermine trust? © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Ethical Dilemma Questions (Cont.) Are there other alternatives that might produce a greater balance of good over harm? It is very important, to try to identify what you could do about it so that you are not stuck in this either All or Nothing Situation. Most of us would absolutely agree on where good and where bad is in a situation, but it’s everything in between that you need to think about and you’re trying to find that the best balance of good over harm. If the interests of some stakeholders conflict with those of others, whose ought to be paramount? © 2016 Cengage Learning®. Moaveni Updated by: R. Alammari & A. Gastli Goals in ethics Education (This Chapter) Improve your skills in resolving ethical dilemmas: Understand the National Society Professional Engineers (NSPE) Code of Ethics. Because it covers all engineering professions. There are also separate but pretty similar ones for each engineering society. Identify situations with ethical concerns. They can be sometimes somethings hidden, so improving your ability to see when there might be a decision that needs to be made and it has an ethical component is an important aspect of being able to resolve that dilemma. Come up with a process to be able to reason appropriate actions in such situations. Reinforce your desire to Do the Right Thing. © 2016 Cengage Learning®.
