OVERVIEW The apprentice firefighter shall demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively back flush a CFD engine Use the Back Flushing the Pump section of this manual as a reference The apprentice firefighter is to complete this skill as an individual in front of the crew. Although the apprentice firefighter is the one being evaluated, this skill station allows all members of the crew to participate, practice, and give feedback Prior to backflushing the pump, contact the Support Services Apparatus Maintenance Captain and make sure replacement intake screens are available in case any get broken. Also, if this skill sheet has been performed recently by another shift, walk through the skills but do not remove the intake screens and do not flow water for backflushing This sheet should be printed and taken with crews as a check sheet to guide the evaluation EVALUATION OBJECTIVE DID NOT PERFORM APPROPRIATELY PERFORMED APPROPRIATELY Gather all crew members and review the Back Flushing the Pump Section of this manual Find an appropriate location with a hydrant Spot the hydrant appropriately and turn off the engine Remove all steamer connections, intake screens, and discharge caps as appropriate Open all applicable drains Make the Flush all intakes and discharges as described in the Back Flushing the Pump Section Shut down the system Reinstall all screens, drains, and caps as appropriate Explain how to get replacement screens if needed Apprentice completed skills successfully Second Edition 01/31/22 127 OVERVIEW The apprentice firefighter shall demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively maximize the potential flow from a positive water source This skill is designed to stimulate hands-on multi-company training. Apprentice firefighters assigned to a station without an aerial/platform will have to plan accordingly with their Officer and Battalion Chief to complete this skill Operating as the Engine Pump Operator, the apprentice firefighter will arrive to a simulated incident and spot a hydrant. They will flow their deck gun and connect to the hydrant before running out of water. With the deck gun flowing and on a hydrant, the apprentice will take note of their residual pressure. Next, the apprentice will coordinate with the aerial operator to make the appropriate connections and charge the aerial master stream. Note: the apprentice will have to determine how much residual volume and pressure is left in the hydrant. If there is not enough to flow both phases at once, the apprentice shall verbalize this inability and explain why. If needed, the apprentice shall shut down the deck gun or run it at a lower pressure to flow the aerial master stream EVALUATION OBJECTIVE DID NOT PERFORM APPROPRIATELY PERFORMED APPROPRIATELY Park appropriately and spot a hydrant Flow the deck gun at the correct pressure (80-100 PSI) Connect to the hydrant before running out of water Verbalize the residual hydrant pressure with the deck gun flowing With help from the aerial operator, make the connections to flow aerial master streams. (See Elevated Master Streams section of this manual) Charge the aerial master stream if able to do so. Perform the calculations to determine the estimated available hydrant flow remaining Shut down the system Apprentice completed skills successfully Second Edition 01/31/22 128 OVERVIEW The apprentice firefighter shall demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively load and deploy common hose loads found in the Columbus Division of Fire Modified Minuteman 50 Bundle Modified Minuteman Bundle Triple Fold Although your specific company may not use each particular load, it is important to be familiar with these common hose loads in case you are in a reserve apparatus that can only fit a particular type of load, you are temporarily transferred to a different fire house, or you are asked to pull a backup line off a different engine Apprentice shall complete a porch drill every time a hose line is pulled to develop muscle memory EVALUATION OBJECTIVE DID NOT PERFORM APPROPRIATELY PERFORMED APPROPRIATELY Load a Modified Minuteman Deploy a Modified Minuteman Complete porch drill 1 in under 30 seconds Load a Modified Minuteman Deploy Modified Minuteman Complete porch drill 2 in under 30 seconds State the appropriate location for the loops in a Modified Minuteman load. (This is not necessarily consistent city-wide; the apprentice should state the location of the loops on their engine company) Load and deploy a Triple Fold Complete porch drill 3 in under 30 seconds Discuss the importance of bringing the coupling to the door Discuss the importance of splitting the door As a crew, discuss how to flake out lines around cars, fences, and other obstacles in your district Apprentice completed skills successfully Second Edition 01/31/22 129
