The nature of “the energy problem” 1.5. World energy supply and consumption 10/2/2023 5 1.1. Introduction : What is Energy? What is Energy? Scientists define energy as the ability to do work. Modern civilization is possible because people have learned how to change energy from one form to another and then use it to do a useful work. There are many different forms of energy, including Heat, Light, Motion, Electrical, Chemical ,.................... (See slide 11) 10/2/2023 6 1.1. Introduction: Importance of Energy Importance of Energy Without energy, life does not exist. There is a minimum amount of energy needed to sustain human life. The energy value of food is the major component, but fuel energy is needed for cooking and, in some climates, for heating homes. In an agricultural society, additional energy is required for growing, gaining, and storing food, and constructing buildings. In modern industrial societies, energy is consumed in providing food, clothing, buildings, transportation, communication, lighting, and numerous services for the entire population. 10/2/2023 7 1.1. Introduction: Why you study energy issues? The acceleration of technological development has led to an increasing need for energy around the world, and has forced the world to work towards achieving energy sustainability by using many different energy sources. Many environmental issues arise from the use of energy: greenhouse gas emissions, acid rain, climate change, dependency on depleting supplies of fossil fuels..... Electrical engineering's have an important role in solving energy problems. The goal of studying energy issues courses is to give students knowledge and skills in the science and technology of today’s diverse energy resources and systems. 10/2/2023 8 1.1. Introduction: Chapter 1 outline This chapter will briefly discuss: sources of energy, the processes of energy conversion, comparative study of renewable and nonrenewable energy, the nature of “the energy problem” and amounts of present energy and global annual energy consumption. 10/2/2023 9 1.2. Energy Conversion Examples of energy conversion from one form to another: The stored chemical energy in coal or natural gas and the kinetic energy of water flowing in rivers can be converted to electrical energy, which in turn can be converted to light and heat. 10/2/2023 10 1.2. Energy Conversion 10/2/2023 Prof. Dr. Magdi El-Saadawi 11 Energy resources, conversion processes, and applications 10/2/2023 Prof. Dr. Magdi El-Saadawi 12 1.2. Energy Conversion 10/2/2023 Prof. Dr. Magdi El-Saadawi 13 1.2. Energy Conversion: Examples As per the law of conservation energy, the quantity of energy in this universe remains constant. It means we can neither create energy nor destroy it. However, energy can be changed from one form to another, this is known as the transformation or conversion of energy. 10/2/2023 14 10/2/2023 Prof. Dr. Magdi El-Saadawi 15 10/2/2023 Prof. Dr. Magdi El-Saadawi 16
