EKISTICS The Science of Human Settlement ARCH516- HOUSING D R. A N TO N I O V. G U T I E R R E Z J R INSTRUCTOR "Ekistics starts with the premise that human settlements are susceptible of systematic investigation". - CONSTANTINOS A. DOXIADIS Human aspirations naturally propel the SCIENCE OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT, “In order to create the cities of the future, we need to systematically develop a science of human settlements.” (Doxiadis) https://www.doxiadis.org/ This science, termed Ekistics, will take into consideration the principles man takes into account when building his settlements, as well as the evolution of human settlements through history in terms of size and quality. The target is to build the city of optimum size, that is, a city which respects human dimensions. Since there is no point in resisting development, we should try to accommodate technological evolution and the needs of man within the same settlement. https://www.doxiadis.org/ WE WILL NOT UNDERSTAND THE ONTOLOGY OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT UNLESS WE WERE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH THE SYSTEM OF HUMAN SPACE, ITS ORIGIN, DYNAMICS, AND EVOLUTION OR DEVELOPMENT. … the whole range of human settlements, is a very complex system of five elements - nature, man, society, shells (that is, buildings), and networks. … could be summarized as the content and the container! https://www.doxiadis.org/ https://archi-monarch.com/ekistics-development-theory/ NATURE Providing the foundation upon which the settlement is created and the frame within which it can function. https://www.titanui.com Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis MAN … the procreator, the one who creates or originate Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis SOCIETY … group of men living together… with shared aspiration or knowledge – culture. Ekistics, an introduction to science https://anthroholic.com/society of human settlement, Doxiadis SHELLS (that is, buildings) … the structure within which MAN lives and carries out his different functions. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis NETWORKS … networks or natural and manmade system which facilitate the functioning of the settlement Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/transport-and- communication-239215021/239215021 … It is a system of natural, social, and man-made elements which can be seen in many ways - economic, social, political, technological, and cultural [for some, including historical]. For this reason only the widest possible view can help us to understand it. [HENCE, SCIENTIFIC PROCESS OR A SCIENCE IS NEEDED TO FULLY UNDERSTAND IT.] https://www.doxiadis.org/ FIVE PRINCIPLES IN HUMAN SETTLEMENT DEVELOPMENT 1. maximization of man's potential contacts with the elements of nature (such as water and trees), with other people, and with the works of man (such as buildings and roads); 2. minimization of the effort required for the achievement of man's actual and potential contacts; 3. optimization of man's protective space, which means the selection of such a distance from other persons, animals, or objects that he can keep his contacts with them (first principle) without any kind of sensory or psychological discomfort. https://www.doxiadis.org/ FIVE PRINCIPLES IN HUMAN SETTLEMENT DEVELOPMENT 4. optimization of the quality of man's relationship with his environment, which consists of nature, society, shells (buildings and houses of all sorts), and networks (ranging from roads to telecommunications) 5. man organizes his settlements in an attempt to achieve an optimum synthesis of the other four principles, and this optimization is dependent on time and space, on actual conditions, and on man's ability to create a synthesis. https://www.doxiadis.org/ THE ASPECTS OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - The greatest mistake in the attempt to enhance or develop human settlement is the focus on its physicality not its essentials including ‘function’ and essence. - It is wrong to assume or present the function as ‘static’ picture, and to ‘mistakenly consider’ shell as the function. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis THE ASPECTS OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - Only correct analysis of the functions explain the settlement. - We should go beyond what the eyes can perceive, not all we see is correct and/or highly essential. We should validate for what we thought is the solution is the one causing the issue in a long term aspect. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis THE EXTENT OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - HUMAN SETTLEMENT has always been created by man’s moving in space and defining the boundaries of his territorial interest... He later created a physical and institutional structure. - In ‘each case’ the process starts with the circle whose radius is defined by man’s willingness to walk. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis THE EXTENT OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - Then it grows depending on the mobility capacity… until it ecumenopolis became inevitable. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis https://archi-monarch.com/ekistics-development-theory/ CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - To discuss quality of life or any other important phenomenon in human settlements without referring to their size is impossible. The confusion caused by the use of terms such as small and big, town and metropolis, city and megalopolis is very great. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT - If we want to avoid [confusion], we must classify all human settlements by size in order to be able to understand them and assign them values. - A small neighborhood with cars running through it loses its values, and a metropolis without means of very fast transportation cannot operate. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - The smallest unit is man himself as an individual. This spatial unit includes the individual, his clothing, and certain furniture, like his chair. - The second unit… is the space which belongs to him alone (ROOM), or is shared under certain circumstances with a few others that is, his personal room. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - The third unit, the family home (DWELLING). - The fourth unit is a group of homes (NEIGHBORHOOD) which corresponds to the patriarchal home of earlier days and probably to the unit of the extended family of our day; this is the unit that children need most, mothers need mainly because of the children, and fathers need, if perhaps not directly for themselves, because they are interested in the satisfaction and happiness of both mother and children. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - TOWN - a place where people live and work, containing many houses, shops, places of work, places of entertainment, etc., and usually smaller than a city - CITY – notably larger than a town Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - METROPOLIS - refer to large urban areas that include a major city and its surrounding suburbs - CONURBATIONS are regions where multiple cities merge into one continuous urban area, while metropolitan cities. Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - MEGALOPOLIS - s a group of metropolitan areas which are perceived as a continuous urban area through common systems of transport, economy, resources, ecology, and so on Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE - URBAN REGION – group of interrelated megalopolis, economically, culturally, etc. - ECUMENOPOLIS - the hypothetical concept of a planetwide city Ekistics, an introduction to science of human settlement, Doxiadis CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT – EKISTICS LOGARITHMIC SCALE CLASSIFICATION OF UNITS 1. Minor Shells Man. Room, house 2. Micro-Settlements The unit smaller than, or as small as, the traditional town where people used to and still do achieve interconnection by walking 3. Meso-Settlements Between the traditional town and the conurbation within which one can commute daily 4. Macro-Settlements Largest possible https://archi-monarch.com/ekistics-development-theory/ https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Ecumenopolis end
