Critical Reflection in Professional Learning and Practice Study weekend 11th - 13th October 2024 Critical Reflection… Our key questions for this course: 1. How can I better understand what has impacted on my professional development and identity? 2. What kind of knowledges contribute to educators’ practice – and to mine in particular? 3. What is the relationship between reflective practice and professional development? 4. What factors condition and mediate what we can do as educators? 5. What is the relationship between values and practice? 6. How do I understand my professional position and what are the implications for me as an educational researcher? Saturday – Session 1 - Definitions Share your definitions of reflection with your colleagues in the group Identify common themes and differences Agree upon a common definition Make a note of any emerging issues Present your definition to the larger group – how? Reading Jigsaw Task (1) – 20 mins Reading groups: same article share your understanding of the key issues raised in the article. agree on a visual you can use as an aide memoire for returning to the home group to ‘teach’ 5 key points worth sharing. each person will need to make a copy of this. Reading Jigsaw Task (2) Form new groups with one person from each ‘article group each person in turn shares their understanding of the particular article they read using the ‘aide memoire’ (4 x 5 mins) Overview How do the ideas in the four articles relate to one another? What are the important messages about reflection? (15 mins) PESTLE Political Economic In your groups, identify key issues under each heading which affect your Social specific context. Minimal writing, just list of specific points. Technological (30 mins in total). Legal Environmental Impact 1. Review the outcomes of the carousel, distil to 2-4 key points. (15 mins) 2. Each person to explain to their own group the impact of specific trends on their role as an educator, drawing on the PESTLE discussion. (15 mins). 3. Summarise this discussion in your groups and identify key points for feeding back to the wider group. (15 mins).
