Discussion 3: Mayers principles The discussion is based on Mayer' cognitive theory of multimedia learning. I will discus five principles of Mayer's from the provided scenarios. Mayers used these principles to provide guideline on how to create workable multimedia or instructional materials. Will further, look at what happen once the listed scenario is violated and will suggest how to overcome the challenges or problem mentiod. **Here are five of Mayers principles.** 1. **Segmentating,** Professor Smurf has put together a video on the 20 common APA mistakes that he finds in student papers. He thinks this will be effective as he only uses 1 minute for each topic. The violation of this principle occurs when professor Smurf provided lengthy video within small or limited time which is not enough for students to comprehend all the information with no break in between. To improve on this, presenter in case professor Smurf have to breakdown the content in smaller and meaningful segments. In order to allow the students to process information and reflect before taking another activity. 2. **Redundancy,** Rashid is concerned about the academic integrity of his students. He has assigned some very advanced papers for them to read this week, and he spotted one of his better students in the library reading the synopsis on Wikipedia. Rashid wonders if he should report the student for cheating. The violation of this principle occurs when text is presented on a screen while at the same times being narrated. To improve on this matters avoid repeating the whole information and find the better way to address the lesson at hand. 3. **Image,** James is a great outdoor photographer. He was invited to give a talk to primary school class on zebras but he couldn't resist starting the talk with a few of his latest pictures of elephants. The violation of this principles occurs when when images being used are not clear, and doesn't go hand in hands with the topic or lessons being presented. To improve this the picture which is selected should be clear and make sense to learners, have to carry the information that is being used. 4. **Pre training,** Mohamed has a thick accent so he has started using a robot voice he found on the Internet to narrate his [videos].  With the latest software he can actually put the picture of the robot on the screen so you can see its mouth move. The violation of this principles comes when, the robot voice is not presenting the right information and use difficult language that learners are not familiar with. The robot voice has to be tested and provide sufficient information that is relevant to the topic that is being taught or presented. 5. **Modality,** Mary has developed a short video showing school children how to behave in a fire drill. She has some great pictures and uses her best authoritarian voice to narrate the piece. The violation of this principal happen in such a ways that, the presentation lacks supporting aid, to make it easy for students to grasp the information being taught. To improve on this, the topic should have enough video, pictures and audio to make the information clear.
