INTRODUCTION Philippines is a country prone to natural disasters. Philippines DISASTER AWARENESS PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT a sudden, calamitous occurrence that causes great harm, injury, destruction, and devastation to life and property “a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources” - UNISDR CLASSIFICATIONS OF DISASTERS A. Natural Disasters B. Man-made Disasters NATURAL DISASTERS a natural phenomenon caused by natural forces VOLCANIC ERUPTION EARTHQUAKE DISEASE disasters caused by man has an element of human intent, negligence, or error involving a failure of a man-made system examples include crime, arson, civil disorder, terrorism, war, biological/chemical MAN-MADE threat, cyber-attacks, etc. DISASTERS refers to the potential (not actual and realized) disaster losses, in lives, health status, livelihoods, assets, and services which could occur in a community or society over some specified future time period DISASTER AWARENESS the state of being aware, or having a knowledge of something being informed about the types of disasters that could occur DISASTER PREPAREDNESS measures taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters it aims to: minimize loss of life and damage facilitate timely and effective rescue, relief and rehabilitation DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IS A PROCESS WHICH IS DONE BEFORE A DISASTER STRIKES. IT CONSISTS OF 5 STEPS: Risk Identification - Process of recognizing and documenting potential risks that could negatively affect an objective Risk Prioritization - Once risks are identified, they must be ranked in order of importance based on their potential impact and the likelihood of occurrence Risk Analysis - This step looks deeper into each risk to understand how bad it could be and how likely it is to happen Risk Treatment - Also known as risk mitigation, risk treatment is the process of selecting and implementing actions to manage or reduce risks Monitoring and Evaluation - This is the continuous process of tracking identified risks, new emerging risks, and the effectiveness of risk treatment measures DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TIPS AS A STUDENT 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. It is a process of effectively preparing for and responding to disasters. It involves strategically organizing resources to lessen the harm that disasters cause. It also involves a systematic approach to managing the responsibilities of disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and DISASTER recovery. MANAGEMENT It consists of 4 phases, such as: preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. PREPARATION RECOVERY activities prior to a disaster activities following a disaster Examples: emergency training, Examples: temporary shelter, long-term preparedness plans, warning systems medical care and counseling DISASTER MANAGEMENT RESPONSE MITIGATION activities during a disaster activities that reduce the effects of disasters Examples: emergency operations, search and rescue Examples: vulnerability analyses, building codes, public education THE END, THANK YOU!
