54 DIGITAL MET MOBILE KIT (DMMK) Introduction 57. Digital Met Mobile Kit (DMMK) (Fig. 2.9) is a digitalised Met equipment, normally used outside the station for VVIP, VIP movement and Para jumping exercises. The equipment records most of the measurable met parameters. These parameters can be viewed instantaneously and stored. This system can upload the stored data to a computer or can load data from computer. This equipment is a compact, hand held and battery operated meteorological observation system intended to provide mobile meteorological observations using single equipment. Fig. 2.9 Pocket Weather Tracker Technical Specification 58. Specifications for Pocket Weather Tracker are as follows: - 55 (a) Battery. (b) Data Storing Rate. 2 seconds to 12 hours (c) Temperature Range. - 45°C to 125°C (Instrument should not be exposed for more than 1 min if it is to be used in conditions less than - 45°C) (d) Display Updates. 1 minute for relative humidity, heat index, dew point and wet bulb temperature and 1 second for rest of the elements such as Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Air Temperatures, Wind Chill, Density Altitude and Barometric Pressure. Display Modes 59. Met Elements mentioned in para 2(d) can be viewed in the following modes on the display screen: - (a) Current. This mode displays the instantaneous reading (b) Max / Min / Avg. This mode displays the maximum, minimum and average reading from stored data. If there is no stored data, the values will be ---- (c) Chart. This mode displays a graphical representation for each measurement. Measurement of Met Elements 60. Following Met Elements can be measured from Pocket Weather Tracker: - (a) Wind direction and speed (b) Cross wind, head wind and tail wind (c) Dry bulb and dew point temperature (d) Wind chill (e) Relative humidity (f) Heat stress (g) Barometric pressure (h) Altitude and density altitude 56 Setting of Pocket Weather Tracker (PWT) 61. Setting procedure of Pocket Weather Tracker is as follows: - (a) Battery Installation. Insert size batteries in battery chamber. The DMMK has a flexible plastic shim that slides in between the two batteries to keep them in place. (b) Date and Time Set Up. Date and time need to be set when DMMK is switched on first time or when batteries are being replaced. (c) Calibration of Digital Compass. The DMMK is essentially required to be calibrated for its internal compass every time it has been switched on afresh after replacement of batteries. If the equipment is not calibrated or improperly and headwind screens and will not display any value. (i) Press on/off button and select system. (ii) Select Compass calibration. (iii) Hold kestrel upright and rotate 3 times slowly @ 10 Sec / turn (Clockwise / Anticlockwise) (iv) Equipment will show calibration successfully completed. (d) Barometric Pressure and Altitude. DMMK measures station pressure (the actual air pressure at the location where equipment is kept) and uses this value to calculate barometric pressure and altitude. Station pressure depends on two factors namely altitude and atmosphere. Since both these factors keep changing, it is important to enter adjustment or references when accurate pressure and altitude readings are needed. Either altitude (station elevation from MSL) or QNH value, as a reference is required to be set for correct pressure values. (i) If QNH is available, go to altitude screen and set the known pressure. As you change the pressure value altitude value will start changing. Read the reference altitude. (ii) After obtaining a current altitude from the altitude screen move to the BARO screen and enter this value as your reference altitude. 57 (iii) If altitude is available, go to BARO screen and set the known altitude, as you change the altitude values pressure value will start changing (Fig. 2.10). Read the reference pressure. (iv) After obtaining a reference pressure from the BARO screen move to the altitude screen and enter this value as your reference pressure. Fig.2.10 - Baro (v) If you wish to know the air pressure Screen of your location (or QFE, if equipment is kept at ARP), set the reference altitude on the (e) Now system is ready for observation. Operating Procedure 62. Operating procedure of Pocket Weather Tracker (PWT) is as follows: - (a) Remove the cover of the wind impeller. (b) Stand outside facing windward side for 3 minutes. (c) Press up / down button (d) All elements can be viewed in different modes mentioned in para 3 and 4, by clicking up / down and left / right button. Downloading data from Pocket Weather Tracker 63. Procedure of downloading the stored data from pocket weather tracker to computer is as follows: - (a) Insert the PWT in Interface; engage the system with help of a rubber band provided for the same. (b) Connect RS-232 (RS-Recommended Standard)) cable from Interface to USB port of the computer. (c) Click on start button of the computer (d) Select Programme (e) Select Kestrel Communicator (if not loaded load with the help of CD provided along with the equipment) 58 (f) Under mentioned screen (Fig. 2.11) will be appear on the monitor Fig. 2.11 - Downloading PWT Data (g) (h) A progress window will be displayed during the upload. If the Communicator is unable to begin a data transfer, an error message will be displayed. Once started, the uploading finishes within about 2½ minutes. A data window as shown in Fig. 2.12 will appear. Fig. 2.12 - Data Window 59 (i) After uploading data from the Kestrel Tracker, you can save the data to a file on your computer for long term storage. (k) Adding Remarks. Before saving your data, you can insert the remarks, which will be saved along with the data and may be helpful when viewing the data logs again later. Loading Saved Data 64. and displayed. Any remarks previously saved with the data will also be displayed. Setting the Kestrel Tracker Date & Time from Computer 65. To set the clock in the Kestrel using the current date and time option available Clearing the Kestrel Tracker Memory 66. sage window will ask you to confirm the deletion. yes Observation at Ops Location 67. A Met Asst with Pocket Weather Tracker/Digital Mobile Met Kit is detailed by the concerned Command/Air HQ for originating current weather observations at OPS location where conventional Met Observatory is not available. The observational data recorded by PWT at OPS location is directly downloaded to laptop/PC if provided or otherwise stored in the device itself. The entire procedure of observation by PWT at OPS location is same as mentioned above. 68. (a) Clean the equipment with soft dry cloth. (b) Make a regular check of battery voltage. (a) inside the chamber when equipment is not in use. (b) finger on the sensors. (c) the equipment in open sun shine.
