**MODULE: 1 WHAT IS PHILIPPINE ART?** What is Art? Greek philosopher Aristotle - may have provided the earliest assumptions of as linked to human instincts. Aristotle - claimed that humans have instincts for imitation and harmony. He described that human beings are the most imitative of living creatures, and through imitation, humans learn and experience pleasure. Art, then, may be defined as a human pursuit to imitate life and the world into something pleasing or beautiful. Picture - This is a two-dimensional image of various subjects ranging from real-life images to the visually abstract. It may be created using different media such as chalk, charcoal, graphite, ink, oil paint, and water color. Sculpture - this is a three dimensional artwork that may be created using stone, marble, wood, and concrete. Architecture - these are structures that meant to be used as shelter. The art of architecture relies on the design and purpose of the structure. Music - this is the art form appeals to the sense of hearing. Music is composed by combining notes into harmony. Literature - this is the art form of language through the combined use of words, creating meaning and experience. Theater - this is the art form of performance. Dramatic texts are portrayed on stage by actors and actresses and are enhanced by props, lights, and sounds. Cinema- this art form is technological translation of theater. In films, special effects are utilized to enhance the storytelling. Dance - this is the art of the human form. The body used, mobilized, and choreographed in specific time, form, and space. **Philippine Art as Filipino** Many scholars debate on the identity of art produced by Filipinos. Are they 100% authentic Philippine art? Many question the rootedness of the artwork produced by Filipino artists. Are the landscape paintings of Fernando Amorsolo or the historical depictions of Carlos \"Botong\" Francisco genuinely Filipino? Are the stories and poems in English written by N.V.M Gonzales or Edith Tiempo Filipino? This epeculation on the \"Filipino-ness\" of works by Filipino artists is caused by our colonial history and migrant reality. **Who is Leo Benesa?** Leo Benesa, is a Filipino poet, essayist, and art critic, he said that there is a certain characteristic of Filipino art. He said, \"The idea was that the depiction of scenes of everyday life and the surroundings without idealizing them was closest in spirit of the Filipino soul and native soil. \"But Benesa also said. Without idealizing them,\" by which he meant that the artworks dictate the authenticity of the artworks produced by Filipino artists. -Benesa describes Amorsolo\'s works as the \"most expensive of the ethos of the race and predominantly agricultural countryside.\"Most of Amorsolo\"s painting depict life in the fields. Appropriation or Art Appropriation When you see T-shirts with the image of Jose Rizal wearing shades or walls of Intramuros in canvas bags, existing artworks are \"appropriated \" to form another artwork. The use of these prints, images, and icons to produced another art form is a feature of contemporary art that combines the past with the present. Performance Performance Performance of contemporary artists has evolved to emphasize spontaneous unpredictable elements of chance.\" Performance artist have tried to interpret various human activities, from ordinary activities such as chores, routines, and rituals, to socially relevant themes such as poverty, commercialism, and war. Space How art transform a space is now an occupation of contemporary artists. These are examples of site-specific art forms wherein the art form is performed and positioned in specific spots, especially in public places. Hybridity Contemporary artists are now as innovative as ever. In traditional painting, only a few materials are of conventional use. Contemporary visual artists, on the other hand, may opt to use coffee for painting or carve miniatures using crayons. Technology is a reality in the present-day world, and contemporary artist have used technology in the creation and dissemination of works of art. ** MODULE: 3 THE PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ART** Contemporary art then permits possibilities of exploring either subject or medium in art to express the Filipino sense of self. Architecture Go around the Philippines and you will see a mixture of the old and the new. Literature eminent scholar and writer Roland Tolentino describe that the Filipino writing in today\'s world contains the diasporic experience and the incorporation of both the rural and the urban experience. Writers have also explored the western genre and have produced legitimate text on prose poetry, flash fiction, magic realism and science fiction. Prose poetry is written like prose, in paragraphs rather than verse, but contains the characteristics of poetry, such as poetic meter, language play, and a focus on images rather than narrative, plot, and character. Flash fiction is a genre of fiction, defined as a very short story. While there is no set word count that separates flash fiction from more traditional short stories Magical realism perhaps the most common term, usually refers to literature in particular, with magical or supernatural phenomena presented in an otherwise real-world or mundane setting commonly found in novels and dramatic performances. Science fiction popularly shortened as sci-fi, is a genre of fiction that creatively depicts real or imaginary science and technology as part of its plot, setting, or theme. The Tanghalang Pilipino and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) theater is still despite the dominance of television, movies, and the Internet. There are multiple stage productions from university-based theater groups to major theater companies. Peta volunteers work to promote the transformative power of theater through its production of performances and workshops. Tanghalang Pilipino Established in 1978, Tanghalang Pilipino is the resident drama company of Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). With its, 15 seasons and 114 production, it is the most attended among the CCP\'s resident companies. Visual Arts The new breed of contemporary Filipino visual artists is becoming bold regarding the expression of personal feelings and perspectives. Annual art competitions also play an important role in encouraging emerging artists to create and produce their work. **MODULE 4: ARTS PROMOTION AND PRESERVATION** Arts Promotion and Preservation Art is a national heritage that is essential in building the nation and ensuring democracy. Paintings, sculptures, songs, dances, poetry, and other art forms remind people of the origins, histories, struggles, and triumphs of the nation. National Commission for Culture and the Arts The NCCA is the country\'s \"overall policy making body, coordinating, and grants giving agency for the preservation, development, and promotion of Philippine arts and culture.\" The creation of the NCCA serves as the state\'s initiative to promote and develop art and culture awareness in the country. **MODULE 5: THE NATIONAL ARTISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES** The Artist and the Contemporary Arts : According to esteemed critic and scholar Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, there is a vital role played by contemporary artists in \"creating art that will contribute to social change by enlightening viewers and audiences about the nature and causes of the problems they face as Filipinos today.\" Dr. Tiongson challenges the artist to create art that has social and political relevance, a kind of art that will contribute to an awareness of present realities and conditions of society. An Artist for the Nation : In 1972, the Philippines named its first national artist---world-class painter Fernando Amorsolo. NCCA and CPjointly administer the nomination and selection of the chosen exemplary artists, who are conferred by the President of the country. 1972, Presidential Proclamation No. 1001, s\. 1972 created and established \"the Award and Decoration of National Artist.\" **MODULE 7: THE NATIONAL ARTISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES FOR ARCHITECTURE** Philippine architecture is unique in that it reflects its cultural heritage and the demand to adapt to its environment. Surveying the architectural styles in the country reveals varieties that range from traditional Filipino dwelling, the bahay kubo, which is a small one-room hut built using light woven materials, to modern and stylish architectural designs that you usually see in urbanized areas. National Artists for Architecture Pablo S. Antonio 1901-1975 Year of Conferment: 1976 Pablo S. Antonio is one of the leaders in modern Philippine architecture. His works are simple and functional. Most of his designs used clean and smooth lines. of his famous projects include the Far Eastern University Administration and Science buildings, Manila Polo Club, Ideal Theater, Lyric Theater, Galaxy Theater, Capitan Luis Gonzaga Building, White Cross Orphanage, lidefonso Paez Santos, Jr. is one of the most recognized landscape architeets in the country. Landscape architecture enhances outdoor public spaces, landmarks, and structures by contouring the environment. Some of his famous works include the prominent landscapes in Paco Park, Tagaytay Highlands Resort, the Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Lipa. Batangas, and Orchard Golf and Country Club in Imus. Cavite. Jose Maria Zaragoza 1912-1994 Year of Conferment: 2014 Jose Maria Zaragoza is an architecture graduate from the University of Santo Tomas. He is the country \'s 82nd licensed architect. His works include St. John Bosco Parish in Makati City, Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City, National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal, Meralco Building, Girsenhills Shopping Center, and the restructuring of the Quiapo Church interior. Leandro V. Locsin 1928-1994 Year of Conferment: 1990 Istana Nurul Iman? It is the palace of the Sultan of Brunei which has a floor area of almost 2.2 million square feet. Locsin has produced 75 residences and 88 buildings, which include 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48 commercial buildings, six major hotels, and an airport terminal building. Juan E. Nakpil 1899-1986 Year of Conferment: 1973 Juan F. Nakpil is another famous Filipino architect He designed the 1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar and reconstructed the Quiapo Church in 1930. The additional dome and a second belfry can be credited to this brilliant artist. Nakpil is also known as the artistic mind behind the Geronimo de los Reyes Building, Magsaysay Building, Rizal Theater, Capitol Theater, Captain Pepe Building, Manila Jockey Club, Rufino Building Philippine Village Hotel, University of the Philippines Administration Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) For almost 50 years, CCP has been serving as the premier venue in the Philippines for culture and the arts. CCP is also responsible for bringing together the different arts from various regions to the entire country and the whole world. National Music Competition for Young Artists Foundation (NAMCYA) **Module 8: The National Artists of the Philippines for Film** On 1 January 1897, the Philippines experienced its first movies with these four films: - Un homme au chapeau (Man with a Hat), - Une scéne de danse Japonaise (Scene from a Japanese Dance), - Les Boxers (The Boxers), and - La place de l\'opéra (The Place of L\'Opera). These films were shown using a Gaumont Chrono-photograph projector (60 mm). 1898 by Antonio Ramos using a Lumiere Cinematograph imported from Paris. Fernando Poe: famous for his role as Flavio in the mythical Ang Panday series. famous films such as - Apollo Robles (1961), - Batang Maynila (Manila Boy, 1962), - Mga Alabok sa Lupa (Dusts in Land, 1967), - Ako ang Katarungan (I Am Justice, 1974), - Tatak ng Alipin (Mark of a Slave, 1975), - Totoy Bato (1977), - Asedillo (1971), and - Partida (Party, 1985). Gerardo \"Gerry\" De Leon 1913-1981 Gerardo De Leon holds the sole distinction as the most awarded film director in the country for the prestigious Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences. De Leon finished medicine but did not practice it to answer a calling in cinema. De Leon also popularized: - Sawa sa Lumang Simboryo, - Noli Me Tangere, Sisa, - Dresebel, The Gold Bikini,Banaue, and - The Brides of Blood Island. Ishmael Bernal 1938-1996 Awarded the National Artist for Film in 2001, Bernal directed the critically acclaimed Himala starring Nora Aunor. films - Dalawang Pugad, Isang Ibon (Two Nests, One Bird, 1977), - Lagi na Lamang Ba Akong Babae? Big Idea (Will lAlways Be Just a Woman?, 1978), - Isang Gabi sa Ivo.
