LESSON 3 FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION What is Function? -Refers to the special purpose of why a certain thing exists. Functions of communication refer to how humans use language for different purposes. Communication, as a human activity, always has a purpose. Humans utilize language for a variety of objectives, which are referred to as communication functions. FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION ▪ Control or Regulation ▪ Social Interaction ▪ Motivation ▪ Information Dissemination ▪ Emotional expression CONTROL / REGULATION Communication functions to regulate and control the behavior of a person or group of people. It can be used to limit the types and quantities of activities that people participate in. CONTROL / REGULATION Examples: 1. Doctors’ prescription – You should take your medicine 3 times a day and eat healthy food. 2. Parents’ giving instructions to their children – Wash the dishes now, or else I won’t allow you to go to the party later. 3. Employers’ orders to their employees 4. Customers’ making orders, etc. SOCIAL INTERACTION Communication functions as a means to casually interact with other people. SOCIAL INTERACTION Examples: 1. It’s nice to meet you. How are you? 2. Let’s hang out on Saturday! 3. Would you like to have some coffee? MOTIVATION Communication functions to inspire or motivate a person or people to do better. This relates to how a person expresses wishes, needs, wants, likes and dislikes, preferences, and inspirations through words. MOTIVATION Examples: 1. We need to be proactive and stop procrastinating. 2. Mario delivers his inspiring message during the culminating activity. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION Communication functions as a way to share information or data in order to educate. This is used when the speaker wishes to make others aware of certain facts, concepts, procedures, and knowledge that they may find valuable. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION Examples 1. Did you know that there’s a secret apartment at the top of the Eiffel tower? 2. You can find the bathroom right next to this door. EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION Communication functions as a way to connect to a person or people for the purpose of affecting them emotionally. “Suppressing your emotions, whether it’s anger, sadness, grief, or frustration, can only lead to any physical stress on your body.” EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION Examples: 1. I’m so glad that you came into my life. 2. I want to finish up my studies with good grades to be accepted into a good university.
