GEN001: Purposive Communication Module #1 Name: _________________________________________________________________ Class number: _______ Section: ____________ Schedule: ________________________________________ Date: ________________ “Communication Process, Principles, and Ethics” Communication is a fundamental process that involves exchanging verbal and nonverbal messages between individuals. It is a dynamic interaction that does not have a distinct beginning or end or follow a predetermined sequence of events. Communication can be defined as the intricate exchange of information, thoughts, and feelings between individuals or groups through various channels and mediums. It involves not only verbal exchanges but also non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. The following are examples of communication situations: a. A professor (source) delivering a lecture (message) to his or her students (receiver). b. A coach (source) talking to his or her players (receiver). c. A parent (source) advising his or her child (receiver) over the phone (channel). d. A video blogger (source) shares his or her opinion (message) to his or her subscribers (receiver). It is not accurate to think communication is easy just because we talk or interact every day. Even though we communicate often, the real issue is whether others truly understand the ideas we convey. Good communication can disrupt peace, start revolutions, and change governments. However, to communicate well, it's not enough to just speak or express ourselves. We also need to learn how to organize our thoughts, manage our feelings, choose the right words to explain ideas, and express ourselves effectively. Since communication is a two-way process, you must know the principles to be observed to make it effective. The principles of communication are foundational concepts that guide effective interaction and exchange of information between individuals or groups. For both oral and written communication, you should be able to apply the following communication principles: 1. Be clear about your purpose. You should know by heart your objective in communicating. 2. Be complete with the message you deliver. Make sure that your claims are supported by facts and essential information. 3. Be concise. You do not need to be verbose or were they with your statements. Brevity in speech is a must. 4. Be natural with your delivery. Punctuate important words with appropriate gestures and movements. Exude a certain degree of confidence if you do not feel confident enough. 5. Be specific and timely with your feedback. Inputs are most helpful when provided on time. The ethics of communication refers to the moral principles and standards that govern how individuals interact and exchange information with others. It involves considering the impact of our communication on others and adhering to values such as honesty, integrity, respect, and fairness Ethics of Communication 1. Establish an effective value system that will pave the way for the development of your integrity as a person; 2. Provide complete and accurate information, the data should always be contextualized and correct; 3. Disclose vital information, whether it is needed or not. Never hide or conceal vital information necessary for transparency.
