Central to Enlightenment thought were the use and celebration of reason, the power by which humans understand the universe and improve their own condition The Enlightenment produced numerous books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars and revolutions. Spread of Ideas Salons The Encyclopedia The Early Enlightenment: 1685-1730 EARLY ENLIGHTENMENT John Locke argued that human nature was “mutable” and that knowledge was gained through accumulated experience rather than by accessing some sort of outside truth. Isaac Newton’s calculus and optical theories provided the powerful Enlightenment metaphors for precisely measured change and illumination. The High Enlightenment: 1730-1780 HIGH ENLIGHTENMENT It was also a time of religious (and anti-religious) innovation, as Christians sought to reposition their faith as materialists argued that the universe seemed to determine its own course without God’s intervention Locke, along with French philosopher Pierre Bayle, began to champion the idea of the separation of Church and State. Coffeehouses, newspapers and literary salons emerged as new venues for ideas to circulate. The Late Enlightenment and Beyond: 1780-1815 LATE ENLIGHTENMENT The French Revolution of 1789 was the culmination of the High Enlightenment vision of throwing out the old authorities to remake society along rational lines, but it devolved into bloody terror that showed the limits of its own ideas. Imagine: How would your life be without that right? His writings pondered elements of society such as religion and equality Freedom of thought and expression Religious Freedom Rousseau's main ideas included: belief that man was born basically good, and idea that society is what corrupts mankind. He also believed in a social contract that maintained the relationship and balance between a government and its citizens. Rosseau promoted the ideals of a true democracy – one vote, one voice. However, that democracy did not apply to women, Kant conceives the Enlightenment as the liberation (“emergence”) of human beings, and establishes its formal basis through the “think for oneself” principle. He also insists that this “minority” is derived from its own unique responsibility. EQUALITY AMONG WOMEN Mary Wollstonecraft wrote critiques of Rosseau’s theories in “Vindication of the Rights of Women.” She explained that, like slaves, women were not learned simply because they had never been afforded the opportunity to be educated. SEPARATION OF POWERS Montesquieu believed that the study of political and social behavior had to consider socio-economic concerns ABOLISHMENT OF TORTURE Beccaria opposes capital punishment and he argues that torture should never be used against an accused whose guilt has not been officially established. https://www.engagewithease.com/journal-45---ldquothe-enlightened-thinkersrdquo.html SEAT WORK: Complete the chart below.
