Enlightenment Unit Notes Locke Hobbes Rousseau Montesquieu - Natural Rights (Life, - Absolute Monarchy is - For our protection, - Separation of Powers Liberty, & Property) the only way people need society - Purpose of - People are born - People are born evil, - People are born Government good, become selfish war is our natural state ignorant, we need - Checks & Balances overtime - Need government to direction - Need government to control everyone - Need government to control the bad - State of Nature help us - State of Nature - State of Nature - Social Contract - Social Contract State of Nature - State of perfect freedom, society can’t exist this way, anyone can do whatever they want with no organized consequences Social Contract - Everyone gives up some rights so we can all live together in peace, give up the right to do whatever you want - ex. kill, steal, kidnap, assault, etc. Purpose of Government - Protect our rights, keep the peace, government gets their power from the consent of the governed (us) Right to Revolution - If the government stops protecting your rights, you have the right to get rid of it/change it Martin Luther & the Reformation - Gave people the power to read the Bible themselves and make their own decisions, caused huge change in the church Divine Right - God’s chosen ruler, can’t disobey because that means you’re disobeying God
