ontraception Chapter10 oligo Contraception= no method of contraception EXCEPT abstinence is completely e ective at preventing unintended pregnancy & STI’s *HPV vaccine is e ective method of preventing HPV infection including genital warts & cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, & anal cancers *Sperm last 3-5 days! *Opill is rst OTC birth control (progestin only birth control pill) Acceptability of contraceptive method: -correct & consistent use of method Factors a ecting acceptability: -user’s religious beliefs & future reproductive plans -product e ectiveness -partner’s preference & support -degree of interruption of spontaneity -ease of use -product accessibility -cost Non prescription contraceptive products: Male Condoms **latex and synthetic protect against STD!! -1 time use! (About 1 dollar per condom) -13 pregnancy out of 100 with condoms *Synthetic, non-latex condom= Durex Aranti Bare Realfeel (polyisoprene), Trojan Supra (polyurethane) *Natural membrane condoms= Trojan Naturalamb (lamb cecum) *Latex condoms= Beyond seven, Billy Boy, Durex, Crown, Trojan, etc. (these are MOST COMMON) SAFE lubricants w/latex condoms: -contraceptive foams/gel -water-based personal lube (K-jelly) -silicone-based lubricants (Astroglide) -glycerin -replens inserts -saliva -water NOT SAFE lubricants w/latex condoms: -NO OIL BASES! They break down the latex!! -topical oils -hemorrhoidal jelly -petroleum jelly (Vaseline) -vaginal creams Female Condoms -can be inserted 2 hours before intercourse -complaint is that it’s squeaky -has 2 parts, inner and outer -1 time use! (About 2 dollars per condom) -21 pregnancies out of 100 with female condoms Vaginal spermicides -“sponge” -Do NOT protect against STD’s! -surface active agents —> immobilize and kill sperm -gels & foams also act as physical barrier against sperm **NOT recommended for women with vaginal anatomical abnormalities -many types but all have Nonoxynol-9 in it! (In U.S.) -about $0.71- $1.44 Emergency Contraception -Plan B= Levonorgesterol containing tablets -suppression of ovulation, interference with transport of sperm or egg -OTC EC products will NOT a ect an implanted embryo or increase risk of malformations!! -used to prevent pregnancy as soon as possible after unprotected sex & up to 3-5 days after sex (w/in 120 hours!!) -MOST e ective in rst 3 days, but can still take w/in 5 days -adverse e ects: common= nausea & vomiting, less common= headaches, breast tenderness, menstrual changes & dizziness -if thrown up, then take another pill! (Take w/food to try avoid nausea side e ect) -can give anti-emetic 1 hour before dose to prevent nausea! -about $40- $50 -1 tablet of levonorgestrel 1.5 mg labeled as a single dose w/in 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure **weight requirement for PlanB= not as e ective for 155 lbs or more, or if BMI ≥26 M
