Definition and Elements of Media and Information Literacy Terms and Definitions PREFERENCE The selecting of someone or something over another or others. HABIT A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. LIFESTYLE A way of life or living of a person or group. What will you do if one day you wake up without the presence of technology; smartphones, tablet, laptop, etc.? Guide Questions CLASS 1. What are the basic DISCUSSION components of Media and Information Literacy? 2. What is Media Literacy? Information Literacy? Technology literacy? 3. How are these literacies connected or related to each other? MEDIA Means of communication as radio and television, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, that reach or influence people widely. Electronic media now comes in the forms of tablets, laptops, desktops, cell phones, mp3 players, DVDs, game systems, radios, and television. Analog telecommunications include some radio systems, historical telephony systems, and historical television broadcasts. Digital telecommunications allow for computer- mediated communication, telegraphy, and computer networks. Information Knowledge obtained from investigation, study, or instruction. Information applies to facts told, read, or communicated that may be unorganized or even unrelated. Literacy The quality or state of being literate. A person's knowledge of a particular subject or field: to acquire computer literacy; Competence or knowledge in a specified area. TERMS TO UNDERSTAND The ability to read, analyze, evaluate Media Literacy and produce communication in a variety of media forms. The ability to recognize when information is Information needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively Literacy use and communicate information in its various formats. The ability to use digital technology, Technology communication tools or networks to (Digital) Literacy locate, evaluate, use, and navigate information.
