Common Laboratory Apparatus Test Tube It is used to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for qualitative experiments. Test Tube Rack It is used to hold multiple test tubes upright at the same time. Microscope It is a tool that produces enlarged images of microscopic objects. Beaker It is a multipurpose piece of equipment used for containing a chemical reaction, measuring liquids, heating them over a Bunsen burner's flame or collecting them in a titration experiment. Graduated Cylinder It is an elongated cylindrical vessel, with graduations to indicate the volume of liquid held, and typically a spout to ease pouring. Erlenmeyer Flask An Erlenmeyer flask is a type of laboratory flask featuring a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck. It is used for a variety of laboratory liquid handling applications Volumetric Flask A volumetric flask is a flat bottom bulb with an elongated neck. It is used to provide accurate volume measurement and for preparing solutions and dilutions of a specific volume. Florence Flask The Florence flask is characterized by a long neck and rounded bottom with a flat base. It is useful as a reaction vessel as well as for heating solutions. Burette It is used in quantitative chemical analysis to measure the volume of a liquid or gas. It is used to dispense and measure a variable amount of a chemical solution. Pipette Pipettes may be constructed out of glass or plastic and are used to transfer a measurable amount of liquid. Petri Dish A petri dish is used to culture different types of cells, including bacteria and molds. Watch Glass A watch glass is a round piece of glass used as a surface to evaporate liquids, to weighed solids , for heating substances or powders and as a cover for a beakers to prevent dust or any other particles entering the beaker. Evaporating Dish An evaporating dish is a glazed porcelain vessel used to heat and consequently evaporate liquids. Crucible A crucible is a cup-shaped piece of laboratory equipment used to contain chemical compounds when heating them to very high temperatures. Thermometer It is an instrument for measuring temperature, often a sealed glass tube that contains a column of liquid, called mercury. Stirring/Glass Rod A glass stirring rod, glass rod, stirring rod or stir rod is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to mix or stir liquids and chemicals. Funnel A funnel is a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem. It is used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening. Wire Gauze The wire gauze provides a stable, heat-resistant surface for containers such as flasks, beakers, and test tubes, and helps to distribute heat evenly. Forceps It is an instrument used for grasping and holding objects. Crucible Tongs Crucible tongs are welded steel tools used to lift a hot crucible from a furnace or for other items which cannot be handled with bare hands. Beaker Tongs Beaker tongs are used to handle beaker that has been heated on a hotplate or over a flame, and are especially useful when working with corrosive or hazardous chemicals that require extra precautions. Test Tube Holder It is a piece of wire bent into a U-shape with loops on each end that can be squeezed together to hold the test tube. Iron stand An iron stand is a scientific equipment used in chemistry to hold other kinds of equipment and glassware, such as burettes, test tubes, and flasks. Tripod It is a piece of three-legged equipment used to support a beaker, flask, or other container during heating. Iron ring It is used in chemical laboratories to support equipment above work surfaces. Double Burette Holder A double buret clamp is a useful labstand accessory for titration since it can hold 2 burettes, one with acid and the other with base. Spatula Spatulas are used to transport and distribute dry chemical compounds. Scalpel Scalpels are excellent for their precision and maneuverability in tight spaces. This makes them popular in laboratories and in manufacturing, or wherever precise cutting or scraping is required. Alcohol Lamp An alcohol lamp is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion in a laboratory. The alcohol lamp uses ethyl alcohol or spirit as a fuel. It is generally made up of glass, brass or aluminum. Bunsen Burner It is used to heat substances, to combust substances, and to sterilize objects on high heat. Hot Plate Hot plates are used in a laboratory as a heat source that can uniformly heat solutions and materials. Triple Beam Balance The triple beam balance is a typical instrument used to measure the mass of various objects. It consists of three beams, each of which is provided with a single sliding weight that has a size corresponding to the gradations of the notched scale on each beam. Aspirator An aspirator is a piece of lab equipment that’s used to suck fluids such as water and wet chemicals out of a dry container like bottles, and dishes. Spot Plate Spot plates help laboratories conduct testing by isolating samples in small wells within the plate. Rubber Tubing Rubber tubing is used for the flow of fluids and gases. - It is generally connected to condensers which are used in the distillation process. Rubber tubing acts as an inlet and outlet of cold water from the condensers. Gun Lighter It is commonly used for igniting the combustion of the gas and air. Base/Acid Burette A burette iss used to deliver measured volumes of an acid or a base solution of known concentration (the titrant) to a flask that contains a solution of a base or an acid, respectively, of unknown concentration (the unknown). Analytical Balance -used to precisely measure chemical -used in quantitative chemical analysis, to determine the mass of solid objects, liquids, powders and granular substances. Condenser a condenser is laboratory apparatus used to condense vapors — that is, turn them into liquids — by cooling them down. Distilling Flask Distilling flasks are used to separate mixtures of two liquids with different boiling points. Mortar and Pestle A mortar is a container used to grind or crush materials with a pestle. Filter Paper Filter paper is used to separate components from air or liquid flow by acting as a semi-permeable barrier. Cork Commonly used in laboratories because of their impermeability and general absence of toxic elements, cork is a useful material to seal test tubes and flasks. Cork, also known as a stopper or bung, is partially inserted inside of a container to form a seal. Cork Borer A cork borer is a metal instrument that is commonly used in chemical or biology laboratories to cut a hole in a cork or rubber stopper to insert glass tubing. pH meter pH meter is an instrument used to measure acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Centrifuge A laboratory centrifuge is used to separate fluids based on density. Samples in a containing vessel are subjected to high- speed rotation to achieve separation. Thank you!
