Laboratory Module 1 Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment Prepared By: Wilslee T. Estrella, RPh LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of this module, the students should be able to: Identify the name of the different laboratory apparatus and equipment. Describe the physical appearances and uses or functions of different laboratory apparatus and equipment. Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment are the tools required to complete laboratory work. Classification of Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment 1. Measuring type 2. Reaction type 3. Vessel type 4. Separation type 5. Solid clamp type 6. Heating type 7. Matching type 1. Measuring Type Mainly used for measuring quality, volume, temperature and density and mostly are glassware, including measuring glass, transfer pipette, measuring cylinder, measuring cup, weighing balances, etc. 1. Measuring Type Basic Examples: Measuring Measuring Graduated Graduated Glass cup pipette Volumetric / cylinder Burette Graduated flask Note: Know their uses/functions 1. Measuring Type Basic Examples: Triple beam Top loading Analytical Laboratory balance balance thermometer balance pH meter Note: Know their uses/functions 2. Reaction Type Mainly used for chemical reaction, also includes a part of heating lab equipment, mostly are glass or porcelain equipment. It includes test tube, flask, evaporating dish, crucible , etc. 2. Reaction Type Basic Examples: Test Crucible Evaporating Laboratory tube with cover dish casserole Distilling Volumetric / Graduated flask flask Erlenmeyer / Beaker Florence flask Conical flask Note: Know their uses/functions 3. Vessel Type Mainly used to contain or store solid, liquid, gas and chemical reagent, such as reagent bottle, vials, beaker, petri dish, culture tube, etc. 3. Vessel Type Basic Examples: Petri Reagent Vials Wash Volumetric / dish Culture tube bottles Graduated flask bottle Beaker Erlenmeyer / Florence flask Conical flask Desiccator Note: Know their uses/functions 4. Separation Type Mainly used for filtration, liquid separation, extraction, evaporation, firing, crystallization, fraction, including funnel, separating funnel, evaporation dish, flask, condenser, crucible, beaker, etc. 4. Separation Type Basic Examples: Evaporating Laboratory Crucible Laboratory dish casserole with cover Filter funnel paper Separatory funnel Crystallizing dish Beaker Buchner Condenser Distilling funnel flask Erlenmeyer / Florence flask Conical flask Volumetric / Graduated Note: Know their uses/functions flask 5. Solid Clamp Type Mainly used to fix and clamp all kinds of chemistry lab equipment and fitting, including iron clamp, iron ring, iron stand and funnel support. 5.
