Why do we communicate? Physical needs Relational needs Identity needs Spiritual needs Why do we communicate? Physical needs communication keeps us healthy Why do we communicate? Physical needs we are inherently social beings; when denied the opportunity for interaction, our mental and physical health can suffer as a result Why do we communicate? Relational needs needs for companionship and affection, relaxation, and escape bottom line, is that we need relationships, and communication is a large part of how we build and keep those relationships Why do we communicate? Relational needs Personal relationships clearly play an important role in our lives, and communication helps us form and maintain them Why do we communicate? Why do we communicate? Identity needs The ways we communicate with others—and the ways others communicate with us—play a major role in shaping the way we see ourselves. We form our identities partly by comparing ourselves with others. Why do we communicate? Identity needs One way we learn how we compare with others is through our communication with those around us. If people treat you as intelligent, shy, or attractive, chances are you’ll begin to believe you are those things. In other words, those qualities will become part of how you see yourself. Why do we communicate? Identity needs Note: Good communicators have the ability to emphasize different aspects of their identities in different situations. Why do we communicate? Spiritual needs an important aspect of identity for many people is their spirituality Why do we communicate? Spiritual needs relate to people’s search for meaning and purpose in life done through discussions about the meaning of life with friends Assignment: Write in essay form on just a page Recall a recent conversation you had, and identify how your communication behavior contributed to your physical, relational, identity, spiritual, and instrumental needs, if at all. Which need or needs took precedence? Why? Submit on or before Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024 and talk or share in class about this particular experience.
