Page 01 An encyclical is a letter from the Holy Father that is a “teaching document.” Its audience is every Catholic and all people of good will. A “social encyclical” applies the consistent, traditional moral teachings of the Church to the social and economic challenges of the current day. Why are they Page 02 important? They address and shed light on issues that are the subject of confusion and debate among humans of all faiths and beliefs, and give us a platform of understanding, not just from the point of view of a Catholic Pontiff, but from a rich fount of humanistic and theological principles. Pope Paul VI Encyclicals/ MMB 2021 The Vatican II was a pastoral Gaudium et Spes council which firmly showed the significance of the church in the world rather than it being of spiritual concern only... Populorum Progressio “The Progress of Peoples” (1967) Pope Paul VI Pope Paul VI most famously stated that Populorum Progressio ‘development is the new name for peace’ and he goes onto express dangers of conflict if inequalities grew. The whole area of human development is examined from an integral and holistic viewpoint rather than development just being based on economic factors. Humanae Vitae “On Human Life” Pope Paul VI ended the speculation Sollicitudo Rei Socialis over oral contraceptives and birth Encyclicals/ MMB control once and for all. He reaffirmed the Church's traditional teachings and classified the Pill as an artificial method of birth control. Octogesima Adveniens “On the Eighth Year” (1971) Pope Paul VI This is strictly an Encyclicals/ MMB 2021 Octogesima Adveniens ‘apostolic letter’ rather than an encyclical. Private property is deemed acceptable but for the first time the world’s goods (including intellectual property) are stated as having a ‘universal destination’. EVANGELIUM VITAE “The Gospel of Life” (1995) Pope John Paul II Powerful underscoring of the dignity and value of life; John Paul II condemns the ‘culture of Social Science / Education death’ where individual freedom is placed before the rights of others to life -hence the condemnation of the death penalty, abortion and euthanasia. With very moving words to women who have undergone abortion; ‘do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope’. This presents positive images of the promotion of a ‘culture of life’ where human freedom finds its authentic meaning and a culture of the family is the ‘sanctuary of life’. Fides et Ratio “Faith and Reason” Page The encyclical Fides Et Ratio was 16 written by Pope John Paul II to his fellow bishops in 1998 to address the Encyclicals/ MMB 2021 relationship between faith and reason. Laudato Si’ On Care for Our Common Home Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home is Encyclicals/ MMB 2021 Octogesima Adveniens the new appealfrom Pope Francis addressed to "every person living on this planet" for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet.
