Page 31 Telescoping Taper Attachment Page 2 The Telescoping Taper attachment allows the operator a method of producing tapers on the lathe with extreme accuracy The Cross Feed Screw is connected to the sliding block. As the screw moves in and out it carries the cross slide with it , thus cutting a taper to a selected angle. The depth of cut is set by turning the cross feed dial. Tool Post Grinder TOOL POST GRINDER Tool Post Grinders. A tool post grinder turns a standard lathe into a versatile, accurate, internal and external grinder. Cylindrical parts can be machined and finish-ground in the same set-up. Tool Post Grinder https://youtu.be/r83UKF3wSXY OBJECTIVE 2 STEADY RESTS, FOLLOWER RESTS, MANDRELS, BETWEEN CENTERS Steady Rest Purpose Supports long work when a tailstock centre cannot be used. Supports the middle of a long workpiece when vibration or deflection is a problem. Allows long internal work (deep bores) Ball Bearing Type Steady Rest FOLLOWER REST Figure 47 - Follower rest. Lathe Follower Rest Follower Rest Purpose Supports cutting long slender work pieces. Prevents the work piece from deflecting away from the tool. Used to eliminate Vibration on long cuts. Note: Unlike Steady Rests, Follower Rests are mounted on the carriage, and moves with the cutting tool. LATHE FOLLOWER REST - VIDEO Cats Head – Used to make odd Shaped items round (non-round workpiece support) A Cats head is used to support a work piece rotating in a Steady rest. Changes a non round work piece into a round diameter. Figure 44 - Cathead. Spiders Mandrels Mandrels are used to grip a workpiece by the bore to permit the outside diameter to be machined. Four common types of Mandrels: Solid mandrels Expansion mandrels Gang mandrels Threaded mandrels Solid Mandrel The solid mandrel has a taper per foot of 0.006 - 0.008. Comes in standard fractional sizes. Identified by stamp on the large end. It is used to turn parts such as bushings and pulleys where the OD must run true to the ID. Always turn towards the large diameter. Expansion Mandrel The taper on the mandrel matches the taper on the sleeve. Part must be pressed on the arbor. Figure 40 - Expansion mandrel Gang Mandrel Morse Taper Used when multiple parts are being machined. Figure 41 - Gang mandrel. Threaded Mandrel The part to be machined must have a matching internal thread. Cannot be machined with reverse spindle rotation. Figure 42 - Threaded mandrel. END Thread Chasing Part Knurling Knurling Knurls can be diamond or straight. Diamond knurls are available in Fine, Medium and Large. Straight knurls have ridges that run parallel to the axis of the work. Straight and diamond shaped knurls can be used to increase the diameter of a shaft or bearing for a quick repair.
