# Chapter 6 Study Guide- Growth of Towns 1. Improvements in farming methods contributed to the growth of medieval European towns because enough crops were grown for a surplus, which could be sold in town. 2. The revival of long-distance trade also contributed to the growth of towns. 3. Specialization is when a certain area “specializes" in one item. For example, Venice specialized in glass. 4. As towns grew feudal lords began to lose power to merchants who were becoming wealthy. 5. Towns bought royal charters to gain independence from feudal lords. 6. Guilds helped customers know that they were getting products of high quality. 7. Know the order to becoming a master: apprentice, journeyman, master craftsman. 8. Through the middle ages, local goods became more important than imported luxury goods. 9. Banking was one of the few occupations available to Jewish people in Western Europe during the middle ages. 10. Many boys grew up to have the same occupation as their father. 11. Unsanitary conditions spread many diseases in western Europe during the Middle Ages. 12. Trial by ordeal and combat were eventually replaced by court trials. 13. Decisions by judges formed what began to be known as “common law”.
