Economic depression Most Americans were already living on the edge of poverty before the collapse Banks foreclosed on homes Workers lost their jobs Husbands left their wives and children to look for work 6. People ran to the banks to withdraw their money when they heard that banks were running out of money Banks had given risky loans to people purchasing real estate or stocks and they weren’t paying the loans back There were no government regulations at the time for banks to keep a reserve of cash, they could loan out whatever they wanted Banks went out of business People lost their life savings, at the time there was no protection for depositors if banks failed 7.
