Module 5: Civil Engineering and Environmental Science CE 101 – Civil Engineering Orientation Intended Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the concepts of green building and sustainable construction. 2. Identify key standards and certifications for green buildings. 3. Discuss the importance of sustainable materials and energy efficiency. Environmental Science What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Environmental Science”? Importance of Environmental Science To realize that environmental problems are global Climate Change Depletion of Ozone Layer Global Warming To understand the impacts of development on the environment Environmental science seeks to teach the general population about the need for decentralization of industries to reduce congestion in urban areas. Why do you think more people are moving to the city? To discover sustainable ways of living Environmental science is more concerned with discovering ways to live more sustainably, by the means of utilizing present resources in a manner that conserves supplies for the future. Growing own Recyclin food g What are other sustainable ways of living? So how can civil engineers contribute to help our planet? Environmental Engineering? It is the of science and application principles to engineering the improve and/or land resources), to provide healthful environment (air, water, air, and land forwater human habitation and for other organisms and to remediate polluted sites. Responsibilities of Environmental Engineers in a Project Develop a system for cleaning the water and reducing waste Utilize a Transportation system that minimizes smoke emissions that are harmful to the all life forms Make use of readily available natural energy Design projects that minimize electric consumption Decrease generating waste Green Building Is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts and can create positive impacts on our climate and natural environment. Green Buildings preserve precious natural resources and improve Materials Green building materials include wood form responsibly managed and certified forests, rapidly renewable plants like bamboo, recycled stone or metal. Materials Carpeting should be made of recycled materials or natural fibers like wool or seagrass. Building Insulation Made up of flexible sheets or blankets from fibers of recycled fiberglass, cellulose denim, sheep’s wool, or clay pellets. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Designs that provide good ventilation that allows fresh air to flow freely throughout the building. Roofs and Walls Green infrastructure on roofs and walls are very effective at saving energy, improving air quality and help in manage stormwater. Windows Window placement in relation to the angle of the sun can affect the energy efficiency of a building as well as heating and cooling costs. Windows In which direction should windows be installed to reduce heat coming through the windows? East and West? North and South? Water Water can be conserved with ultra-low flush toilets and low flow faucets. Greywater systems recycle water that comes from washing machines, sinks or dishwashers. Are Green Buildings Cheaper? Are Green Buildings Cheaper? It has been found that a green building costs about 2% more than a non-green building. Although, energy savings alone help recoup the extra cost of the building in about six years.
