Cystic Fibrosis (Mucoviscidosis) Cystic fibrosis is a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs, affecting cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein helps maintain the balance of salt and water on many surfaces in the body, such as the surface of the lung airways.
