Atoms are indivisible (not able to be divided) Atomic Theory 1. All matter is made of atoms 2. Atoms are indivisible (not able to be divided) 3. All atoms of the same element are the same Atomic Theory 1. All matter is made of atoms 2. Atoms are indivisible (not able to be divided) 3. All atoms of the same element are the same 4. Atoms of different elements are different from each other Atomic Theory 1. All matter is made of atoms 2. Atoms are indivisible (not able to be divided) 3. All atoms of the same element are the same 4. Atoms of different elements are different from each other 5. Two or more elements join to make a compound Law of Conservation of Mass Matter cannot be created or destroyed only changed. Mass (amount of matter in an object) NEVER changes!!!!!! Weight does because GRAVITY pushes you on Earth. John Dalton He proposed that the atom is indivisible and is a solid positive sphere (circle). Billiard Ball Model https:// s3.amazonaws.com/ s3.timetoast.com/public/ uploads/photos/2288904/ finishedlg_sphere_1_.jpg? 1474026788 John Dalton Dalton conducted experiments that determined substances are made up of proportions of atoms. These experiments led to the Atomic Theory. J. J. Thomson Discovered that electrons (negative) are found in the positive solid sphere Plum Pudding Model https:// tse1.mm.bing.net/th? id=OIP.x_O6kxMxiv6c A_beeQ6fLQHaFA&pi d=Api&P=0&w=266&h J. J. Thomson J. J. Thomson He was able to prove with the Cathode Ray Tube that a positive charge plate would attract a beam of light. He concluded that because it attracted the beam of light that the light must be negative (opposites attract). He called these corpuscles which are now called electrons. J. J. Thomson- Cathode Ray Tube Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Goyscbazk Ernest Rutherford Demonstrated that an atom has a positively charged nucleus that contains most of the mass of the atom with empty negative space around it. Gold Foil Experiment Ernest Rutherford Ernest Rutherford- Gold Foil Experiment Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBqHkraf8iE Niels Bohr Proposed that electrons orbit the positive nucleus in fixed (nonmoving) orbits. This is the model we draw and use to count atoms. Bullseye Model Niels Bohr Think of his atom as a Bullseye target. The center is the nucleus and each level is worth points. You have to stay in your level. Electron Cloud Model (Heisenberg and Shrodinger) The modern model of the atom. It has a positive nucleus with electrons moving in orbits around it making a cloud Atomic Theory Timeline Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, Electron Cloud Mnemonic Device Do Teachers Read Books Every Class? ***To help students order the scientists in timeline***
