COMPUTER BASICS 2 BTT1O SUCCESS CRITERIA I will be successful when I can ………………… List and explain the 4 main functions of a computer Identify which devices are responsible for inputting and outputting data to and from a computer. Understand the purpose for various hardware components both inside and outside the computer. FUNCTIONS OF COMPUTERS Computers have 4 main functions. 1. 2. 3. 4. Input Storage Processing Output INPUT Keying using a keyboard Pointing and clicking using a mouse or touchpad Pointing using a stylus Touching a touch screen Speaking into a microphone STORAGE The computer saves data or instructions in its memory for use during processing RAM is temporary ROM (or your hard disk) is permanent PROCESSING Data is raw, unprocessed numbers Information is data that has been processed so that it can be understood and used OUTPUT Something you see on the screen e.g. an answer to a mathematical problem Something you hear e.g. a ding when you make an error Something you command the printer to print POWER SUPPLY AND MOTHERBOARD The computer needs a power supply Electricity is brought into the computer through a power cord Once inside the computer, electricity travels through metal tracks on the motherboard The motherboard is the main circuit board of the computer All components inside and outside the computer are attached to the motherboard EXPANSION SLOTS Sockets on the motherboard for additional devices e.g. sound cards or modem The number of expansion slots on a computer indicates the number of expansion cards that can be added Beside the expansion slots, you will find the bus BUS AND IDE CABLES The bus is a set of conductor wires (IDE cables) that transport data between the components of the computer Think of the bus as a highway for bits of information to travel inside the computer case The wider the bus, the faster it is CPU AND CACHE The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is also called the microprocessor This is the main computer chip that manages information flow in the computer The CPU has 4 main functions: Fetch Decode Execute Store SUCCESS CRITERIA I will be successful when I can ………………… List and explain the 4 main functions of a computer Identify which devices are responsible for inputting and outputting data to and from a computer. Understand the purpose for various hardware components both inside and outside the computer.
