Study Notes
Computer Basics
- A computer has four main functions: Input, Storage, Processing, and Output.
Input
- Input devices include keyboards, mouse or touchpads, stylus, touch screens, and microphones.
- These devices allow users to enter data or instructions into the computer.
Storage
- The computer saves data or instructions in its memory for use during processing.
- There are two types of memory: RAM (temporary) and ROM (permanent, also known as a hard disk).
Processing
- Data is raw, unprocessed numbers.
- Information is data that has been processed so that it can be understood and used.
- The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the main computer chip that manages information flow in the computer.
- The CPU has four main functions: Fetch, Decode, Execute, and Store.
Output
- Output devices display the results of processed data.
- Examples of output include: answers to mathematical problems on the screen, sounds such as error dings, and printed documents.
Power Supply and Motherboard
- The computer needs a power supply to function.
- Electricity is brought into the computer through a power cord and travels through metal tracks on the motherboard.
- The motherboard is the main circuit board of the computer, and all components inside and outside the computer are attached to it.
Expansion Slots and Bus
- Expansion slots are sockets on the motherboard for additional devices such as sound cards or modems.
- The number of expansion slots indicates the number of expansion cards that can be added.
- The bus is a set of conductor wires (IDE cables) that transport data between the components of the computer.
- The bus can be thought of as a highway for bits of information to travel inside the computer case, and the wider the bus, the faster it is.
