Alhambra The Alhambra was a palace and court complex for the Nasrid ruler. It was a functioning fortified town and served as the administrative center for the larger surrounding city of Granada and Nasrid empire. Alhambra The Western end of the Alhambra is the Alcazaba, or fortress. This was a double walled enclosure that also contained barracks, baths, storerooms, and a dungeon. These courtyards/gardens were meant to be the realization of Islamic paradise, and encouraged contemplation and prayer. Their beauty also radiated God’s glory on Earth.
