HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: ADMINISTRATIVE – 005 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Personal Appearance Revision: 2 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 3 PURPOSE Each member of this Department represents the Village as a whole every time we encounter the Public. In addition, this policy attempts to comply with appropriate NFPA standards. Personal appearance is an important facet in projecting a professional image and our ability to do our job. POLICY Male Sworn Personnel HAIR - Must be neatly groomed and of a length not to extend below the middle of the rear of the uniform collar while standing at attention in the proper uniform. Hair can extend over the ears, but cannot cover the entire ear. Unique hair styles or any unnatural color will not be allowed. SIDEBURNS - 1. The length shall not extend beyond the tip of each ear lobe. 2. The width shall not exceed 1¼ inches at the broadest point. 3. The growth shall not be more than ¼ inch in depth. MUSTACHE - 1. The pattern shall be neatly trimmed. 1 2. The hair growth shall not extend past or downward more than ¼ inch beyond the corner of the mouth. 3. The ends may not be waxed or twisted. BEARDS/GOATEES - Beards, goatees or other growths of hair below the upper lip line on the chin or lower jawbone area are prohibited. CLEAN SHAVEN - Except for the areas of facial growth permitted by this order, all members shall be clean-shaven. JEWELRY - 1. Earrings or piercings will not be worn while on duty. 2. Necklaces shall not be worn outside or on top of any Department uniform. Choker types are not permitted. 3. Rings - no more than two (2) per hand. The wearing of any jewelry is discouraged by Line Personnel due to the safety hazards involved. Female Sworn Personnel HAIR – shall be cut and/or styled so as not to extend below the middle of the shirt collar while standing at attention in the proper uniform. Unique hair styles or any unnatural color not be allowed. Hair shall be cut and/or styled in such a manner as to not hang down on the side in a loose manner and hair in front shall not protrude under the uniform hat. JEWELRY - 1. Earrings or piercings will not be worn while on duty. 2. Necklaces shall not be worn outside or on top of any Department uniform. Choker types are not permitted. 3. Rings - no more than two (2) per hand. The wearing of any jewelry is discouraged by Line Personnel due to the safety hazards involved. PROCEDURE The Company Officer or Acting Officer shall inspect all his/her personnel in attendance at daily roll call and monitor their appearance throughout their tour of duty. Upon viewing any violations of this policy, the Company Officer or Acting Officer is to direct the noncompliant person to correct the problem area. Sideburns, mustache, facial hair, and unique hair styles or color problems are to be corrected immediately.
