Acu-techniques Year-End Study Guide Moxabustion: Actions: 1. Warms meridians and dispels cold 2. Induce smooth flow of qi and blood 3. Strengthen yang from collapse Mediums: -Ginger-Use for SP/ST deficiency with s/s such as poor appetite, diarrhea, and abdominal pain -Garlic-For infectious processes especially of skin -Salt-Yang collapse -Fu Zi (Aconite)-Also yang collapse Contraindications: Heat conditions such as high fever (duh); Abdominal and lumbo- sacral region of pregnant women; No direct/scarring moxa on face, head, or large blood vessels Cupping: Actions: 1. Warming 2. Promotes the free flow of qi and blood 3. Diminishes swelling and pain Contraindications: Skin ulceration, edema, not over large blood vessels, high fever, convulsions, and bleeding disorders; Not over abdominal or sacral regions of pregnant women Estim: Frequencies: Regular Frequency: For pain and spasm; Draining excess Alternate Quick and Slow: For paralysis and numbness; Tonifying deficiency Don’t use Silver Needles Contraindications: Patients with history of heart disease; Important not to cross heart with heart disease patients. Three-Edged Needle (Lancet) Actions: 1. Move Qi and Blood; 2. Clear Heat Indications: High Fever, Sore throat, Local congestion or swelling Contraindications: Weak constitution, pregnant women, bleeding conditions Plum Blossom/7Star Needle: Actions: 1. Move qi in meridians; 2. Regulates the zang-fu Indications: Skin diseases and Nervous System disorders Contraindications: Local Trauma and ulcers Tonification vs Sedation Techniques: Tonification: Slow Insertion; Rapid Withdrawl; Rotate clockwise; Close the hole; Needle in direction of channel; Insert on exhale; Withdraw on inhale Sedation: Rapid Insertion; Slow Withdrawl Rotate counterclockwise; Leave hole open, Needle against direction of channel; Insert on inhale; Withdraw on exhale General Precautions and Contraindications 1. Few needles or delay treatment if person is famished, intoxicated, or very weak 2. Pregnancy: 1st Trimester-Contraindicated to needle on lower abdomen or lumbosacral region; After 3 months-Contraindicated to needle on upper abdomen and lumbosacral region. For whole pregnancy-Contraindicated to needle LI 4, SP 6, UB 60, GB 21, UB 67 Management of accidents 1. Fainting- 1st remove all needles, then have patient lay down, offer warm or sweet water. Can press Du 26, PC 9, PC 6, ST 36, Shi Xuan, or moxa DU 20. If no response call 911. 2. For stuck, bent, or broken needle- You can try twirling needle, massaging surrounding muscles, inserting another needle in nearby muscle, changing patient’s position, using forceps, or pushing down on surrounding skin. If needle is broken under the skin, however, they must be referred to surgeon. Needling Angles: Transverse: over bone such as on skull. i.e. Du 20 Oblique: over organs such as in rib spaces on chest and upper back Pneumothorax symptoms: Cough, Chest pain, Shortness of breath, Anxiety Perpendicular everywhere else For some points over bone where there is extra skin, use pinching technique i.e. Yin Tang; UB 2
