The country where we were born, the country where we grew up ea ng the food and water, the country where we breathe the air, our 'heavenly homeland' is called Assam and we iden fy ourselves as Assamese. But the name of this country was not Assam before. The country was called Praki Desh in Vedic mes, Pragajyo sh in mythological mes and Kamarupa in Tantric mes. The kingdom of Kamrup was once bordered by the Bay of Bengal in the south and the dead stream of the Brahmaputra flowing through Karatwa and Maimansingh district in the west.
