# Communication Functions - The image shows five interlocked gears that represent different communication functions. - **Control:** Controlling or managing the behaviors of other people. - **Social Interaction:** Interacting with other people. - **Motivation:** Communicate to achieve a goal - **Information:** Asking or giving information. - **Emotion:** Expressing your own emotions and feelings. ## What are "Functions"? - These are the "reasons" why people communicate with each other. - Each function is based on the speaker's purpose for communicating. - These functions can be divided into two: verbal and non-verbal. ## Functions ### Control - Controlling or managing the behaviors of other people. - Communication functions to control behavior. ### Information Dissemination - Asking or giving information. - Exchange of any information. - Communication functions to convey information. ### Social Interaction - Interacting with other people. - Social interaction allows people to be connected to one another. ### Motivation - Communicate to achieve a goal. - Communication motivates or encourages people to live better. ### Emotional Expression - Expressing your own emotions and feelings. - Communication facilitates people's expression of their feelings and emotions. ## The 7Cs of an Effective Communication - Effective communication is essential in every aspect of our life, whether it be at home, at work or with our friends. - A person who can communicate effectively will always have the advantage when dealing with people. ### 1. Completeness - Complete communication is essential to the quality of the communication process in general. - Hence, communication should include everything that the receiver needs to hear for him/her to respond, react, or evaluate properly. ### 2. Conciseness - Conciseness does not mean keeping the message short, but making it direct or straight to the point. - Insignificant or redundant information should be eliminated from the communication that will be sent to the recipient. ### 3. Consideration - To be effective, the speaker should always consider relevant information about his/her receiver such as mood, background, race, preference, education, status, and needs, among others. - By doing so, he/she can easily build rapport with the audience. ### 4. Concreteness - Effective communication happens when the message is concrete and supported by facts, figures, and real-life examples and situations. - In this case, the receiver is more connected to the message conveyed. ### 5. Courtesy - The speaker shows courtesy in communication by respecting the culture, values, and beliefs of his/her receivers. - Being courteous at all times creates a positive impact on the audience. ### 6. Clearness - Clearness in communication implies the use of simple and specific words to express ideas. - It is also achieved when the speaker focuses only on a single objective in his/her speech so as not to confuse the audience. ### 7. Correctness - Correctness in grammar eliminates negative impact on the audience and increases the credibility and effectiveness of the message. ## Speaking Styles ### Manuscript - A written text that speaker reads aloud to an audience from a teleprompter or paper script. ### Memorized - A speech that a speaker recites from memory without the use of notes or written prompts. ### Impromptu - A speech that is given without preparation or forethought. ### Extemporaneous - A public speaking style that is carefully prepared and practiced, but not memorized. ## Types of Communication ### 01 Intra personal - This refers to communication that centres on one person where the speaker acts both as the sender and the receiver of the message. ### 02 Inter personal - This refers to communication between and among people and established personal relationship between and among them. ### 03 Public Speaking - Oratory type, is the practice of delivering speeches to a live audience. ### 04 Mass Communication - Communication through television, radio, newspaper, magazines, books, billboards, the internet and other type of media.
