# 15/8 W3 Lecture 3 Over 2 in 5 have experienced a mental health disorder at some time in their life. 1 in 5 have had a mental health disorder at some time in the last 12 months. ## Psychology: Scientific Study of behavior, emotion, cognition ### Abnormal psychology: study of abnormal behavior #### Psychopathology: the study of mental illness including all (or scientific method) parts of it. * Empirical method used to classify this as a disorder and how to diagnose. Used for: * Description (classification, diagnosis) * Causation (bio-psycho-social) * Treatment (effectiveness) Defining a MHC: * Very hard, like between health/illness them blamed * Illness (abnormalities needs to be classified and differentiated) * Treatments need: rigorous testing, placebo groups, etc. * 3Ds of abnormality: * Deviates - does it deviate from what you would expect? * Distress - recognizable distress in the person or their family * Dysfunctional - can they function in their life and society? | Normal | Abnormal | |---|---| | - Deviance | - Maladaptive behavior | | - Personal distress | - | ## Psychological * Emotions, attitude * Learning * Beliefs * Stress ## Social * Family * Peers * Culture * Socioeconomic factors ## Biological * Physiological * Medications * Neurochemistry * Genetics ## Maladjustment * When mental conditions form ## Psychiatrist * Fully qualified medical doctor * Specialist training ## Clinical Psychologist * Special track/ and qualifications in Psych * Assessments, treatment formulation, and more * They take a bio-psycho-social approach * Cannot prescribe medication ## Registered Psychologist * Treats less serious people * Generally less trackily required ## Social worker * Works in direct services or clinical fields. ## Councellor * Assists people to gain understanding of themselves and make changes in their lives. * No qualification required **Only registered use title is: Psychologist.** **Abnormal is difficult to define!**
