INTRODUCTION TO RECREATION AND LEISURE LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. define recreation, leisure, and other related terminologies; 2. explain the relationship between leisure, recreation, and tourism; DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Leisure in simple terms, means the free time that can be spent as you see fit and the activities that are involved in such time but also time. It is said to be the time that is not necessarily planned but also necessarily wasted, which is believed to be the chance for the body to rejuvenate itself. DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Leisure is free time available to the individual when the disciplines of work, sleep, and other basic needs have been met. It is time that can be used in ways determined by the individual’s discretion. Basic needs include essential cooking, shopping, housework, childcare, and hygiene. Work includes travel time to and from work (Baud-Bovy and Lawson, 2002). DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Leisure a time during which somebody has no obligations or work responsibilities, and therefore is free to engage in enjoyable activities. RICHARD KRAUS (1978) a pioneer in the field of leisure and recreation, outlines four views of leisure. These are the following: Classical view of leisure Leisure as a symbol of social class Leisure as a form of activity Leisure as unobligated time CLASSICAL VIEW OF LEISURE Regarded leisure as “a state of being” in which activity is performed for its own sake The most critical aspect of this view is considered to be the “state of mind” and this state is brought about through the activities engaged in for their own sake. LEISURE AS A SYMBOL OF SOCIAL CLASS This view of leisure is traced back to Thorstein Veblen’s Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) which both described the conditions that brought about this view as well as helped to establish this particular meaning of the term. Leisure here becomes the prerogative of an elite class that uses it to establish and maintain its position through such means of conspicuous consumption. This is a negative view of leisure and has in combination with the teachings of the Protestant ethic, contributed to the negative image that leisure has achieved. LEISURE AS A FORM OF ACTIVITY According to this view, leisure is a non-work activity in which people engage during their free time This leisure activity may serve specific functions such as relaxation, entertainment, or personal development LEISURE AS UNOBLIGATED TIME Here leisure is viewed as unobligated or discretionary time. This is the most frequently used definition in the sociological literature and is often referred to as the residual definition DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Recreation The term recreation appears to have been used in English first in the late 14th century, first in the sense of “refreshment or curing of a sick person.” It is derived from the Latin word “re” which means again and “creare” which is translated as create (Online Etymology Dictionary). DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Recreation it is a break from the monotony and a diversion from the daily routine. covers broadly any pursuit taken up during leisure time other than those to which people have a high commitment (overtime, second job, home study, and various maintenance jobs around the house) (Baud- Bovy and Lawson, 2002) DEFINITION OF LEISURE & RECREATION Recreation Recreation differs from leisure in the sense that is purposeful activity that includes the experience of leisure in activity contexts hence, recreation is an activity of leisure. The need to do something for recreation is an essential element of human biology or psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be fun. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEISURE, RECREATION, AND TOURISM Hall and Page (2007) conclude that tourism and recreation should be viewed as a part of the wider concept of leisure. Broken lines are used to illustrate that the boundaries between concepts are “soft”. Work is differentiated from leisure with there being two main realms of overlap: first, business travel, which is seen as a work-oriented form of tourism to differentiate it from leisure-based travel; second, serious leisure, which refers to the breakdown between leisure and work pursuits and the development of leisure career paths concerning their hobbies and interests. As seen and described previously tourism, recreation and leisure are overlapping concepts and there are difficulties defining the terms. But there are certain criteria for all of them. Leisure includes discretionary time, recreation is an activity in leisure time and tourism is temporary visiting. WORK Leisure Business Tourism Travel Leisure Recreation Travel FIGURE 1. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEISURE, Serious Leisure RECREATION, AND TOURISM (HALL AND PAGE 2007) POINTS TO REMEMBER LEISURE INCLUDES DISCRETIONARY TIME, RECREATION IS AN ACTIVITY ON LEISURE TIME AND TOURISM IS TEMPORARY VISITING.
