HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: FIRE SCENE OPERATIONS – 004 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Standpipe Guidelines Revision: 4 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE The following guidelines should serve as a guideline for engine companies and other fire suppression units involved in interior attacks involving buildings equipped with standpipe systems. POLICY The basic premise, which these guidelines are founded on, relates that engine company personnel must function as a single attack team. The first engine company must be responsible for securing a continuous water supply to the standpipe system (providing they have adequate manpower) through the standpipe siamese or storz connection (except for all standpipe equipped target hazard buildings as defined in the response guidelines) and attaching interior attack lines to the standpipe outlet on the fire floor. If conditions do not allow the use of the standpipe on the fire floor, it must be communicated which standpipe the primary attack line used. The second engine company is responsible for connecting a backup line to the standpipe connection on the floor below the primary attack line and for securing a continuous water supply to the standpipe siamese or storz connection (for all standpipe equipped target hazard buildings as defined in the response guidelines). In a standpipe equipped building, in most cases, using the standpipe system is the preferred method of extinguishment. The first arriving Company Officer will determine the plan of attack and verbalize that over the radio. PROCEDURE A. FIRST ENGINE COMPANY Responsibilities: 1. Connect to the exterior standpipe siamese or storz connection and maintain a proper and continuous flow of water for the standpipe system using the closest fire hydrant to the siamese or storz connection (except for standpipe equipped buildings defined as target hazard buildings). Note: Whenever the initial engine is at 2 personnel (with no other support personnel), the second engine should be responsible for supplying the siamese system (no matter what building is involved). If the building is equipped with a storz connection, then the 5” LDH should be connected directly to the storz connection. 1 2. Enter the building with hand pump or water extinguisher (with at least two personnel) and two 1-3/4" apartment packs (2-1/2" apartment pack is optional). 3. Connect a 1-3/4" interior attack line to a standpipe outlet located on the fire floor and attack the fire. If conditions do not allow the use of the standpipe on the fire floor, it must be communicated which standpipe the primary attack line used. The size of the building may warrant adding the second 1-3/4" (or 2-1/2") apartment pack to the initial attack line in order to ensure reach. B. SECOND ENGINE COMPANY Responsibilities: 1. Whenever directed by the first engine (due to reduced manpower on the first engine) or for standpipe equipped target hazard buildings connect the exterior standpipe siamese or storz connection and maintain a proper and continuous flow of water for the standpipe system using the closest fire hydrant to the siamese or storz connection. If the building is equipped with a storz connection, then the 5” LDH should be connected directly to the storz connection. 2. Enter the building with two 1 ¾” apartment packs and one 2 ½” apartment pack. a company of at least two people. Connect two 1-3/4" (and/or a 2-1/2" line) interior attack lines to the standpipe outlet located on the floor below the interior attack line and backup the initial attack companies. This backup line is to be laid in the same stairwell as the initial attack line whenever possible. DEFINITIONS EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES End of Document 2
