Video Viewing – Continue Watching Hans Gosling – Don’t Panic! Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FACK2knC08E&t=4s UNIT 2.2 So Where is Everyone? Vocabulary and Definition Factors Affecting Population Density and Distribution Vocabulary and Definition Vocabulary and Definition Population distribution –refers to how the people living in a place or an area are spread around. Population distribution means the pattern of where people live. World population distribution is uneven. Places which are sparsely populated contain few people. Places which are densely populated contain many people. Population density Population density is a measurement of the number of people in an area. It is an average number. It is calculated by dividing the total number of population by land area. It is usually shown as the number of people per square kilometre (pop/km2). Population in Theory Substantial downside of the population density figure If each of these boxes represent 1 square kilometre and each black dot represents a person, this is what the world’s population density would look like in 2005 and 2050 In reality, the population is much more in some places than others. Urban areas are denser than rural areas, and some countries are denser than others. Vocabulary and Definition Population Density Formula: Population Density = Number of People Land Area (usually in square kilometers) This map is a choropleth (shading) map that illustrates population density. The darker the color the greater the population density. Which among the continents do you think has the highest population density? Activity 1: Population Density Calculation Population Density = Number of People Land Area (usually in square kilometers) Calculate the Population Density of Each (Do on your notebook and show the steps.) Name Land Area(km2) Number of People Rwanda 26,338 12,374,397 Netherlands 41,526 17,443,331 Kazakhstan 2,724,900 18,232,000 Haiti 27,065 11,263,077 Israel 22,072 9,170,100 Russia 17,125,242 146,877,088 India 3,287,240 1,359,651,310 Australia 7,692,024 25,642,709 Bolivia 1,098,581 11,307,314 Canada 9,984,670 37,953,360 Activity 1: Population Density Calculation With your answers from the previous problem, identify whether the population density of a country is under high or low, and rank the country by its population density in descending order. People often settle in places with high economic developments. Factors Affecting Population Distribution Factors attracting settlements (Natural Factors): Good supplies of natural resources - Areas rich in resources (e.g. coal, oil, wood, fishing etc.) tend to be densely populated e.g. Western Europe. These resources can be processed and used in industry and manufacturing, thus more job opportunities and economic growth. Factors Affecting Population Distribution Factors attracting settlements (Human Factors): Economic Condition of a Location - The availability of jobs and economic activities within a region, plus an effective and efficient services and facilities like infrastructure, including transport, energy, water and sanitation, better schools and health services attract more people. - As people are able to travel and transport goods, this leads to the development of industry, providing jobs to people in the local area, which in turn increases the population in the area. Social Condition of a Location - People want to settle in places where they feel secure. So an area with a high crime rate discourages settlement, while an area with low crime rate attracts settlement. Factors Affecting Population Distribution Factors discouraging settlement (Natural Factors): Mountainous or highland areas - Aside from high altitude areas having very low temperatures, steep slopes are less settled due to thin soils and difficulty to erect buildings and build roads due to risk of soil erosion. Travel is also tough in the mountains making trading and other community development difficult to happen. eg. Himalayas Factors Affecting Population Distribution Factors discouraging settlement (Natural Factors): Dense vegetation - Dense forests discourage settlements because of wild animals and may also harbor disease vectors such as tsetse flies e.g. Miombo woodland of Tanzania Factors Affecting Population Distribution Factors discouraging settlement (Natural Factors): Extreme climates - Areas with extreme climates such as extremely hot and cold areas make it difficult to grow crops and access water, and that is why they are sparsely populated e.g. the Sahara Desert and Arctic Region Activity 2: Population Density China and Brazil have high land areas. For each, give at least two reasons why they have low population densities. Population Density and Distribution Recall: Population Density (The darker the shaded area, the higher the density) Describe and explain the global population distribution pattern Describe the global population density pattern Population Density and Distribution Observe this choropleth map and list down characteristics of places with high population density and a separate list on characteristics of places with low population density. Do you think the COVID-19 could affect population density and distribution? Try to explain your answer. Population Density and Distribution The activity in the following slides should help you compare the relative population density of different countries and examine the reasons for these differences and their effects. Activity 3 Calculate the population density of each box and try to identify which country or region it is. Some of its area may not be inhabited by people, and some areas may be highly urbanized. ◆ There are countries where the population densities of urban areas are extremely high but there are huge areas that can hardly be inhabited and more rural areas being sparsely populated. These countries’ population density figures can be misconceived as very low. (i.e. Brazil with its huge Amazon rainforest) Thank You! Cristina L. Lumibao
