JULY 2024 ANGOLA Angola once had a lot of wildlife, but after the 25 years of civil war and because of poaching there was very little wildlife left. To restore the wildlife and tourism, Angola and South Africa began operation Noah’s Ark in 2001. This involved transporting animals from Botswana and South Africa to Angola. Other species of game, like gira e, zebra, and wildebeest were also transferred from Namibia. ANGOLA Since the discovery of dinosaur bones in the coast area, Angola’s coastline has been attracting tourist. Kissama National Park Kissama - Kissama National Park is located about 70km south of Luanda. - It is pronounced “kee-SAAM-a” National - This is the most accessible park in Angola. - Tourist facilities include, lodges, restuarants and bars. Park Why a tourist attraction? - The park’s landscapes vary from coastal tree savannah to dense thickets and open grasslands. - These landscapes are home to many game animals example elephant, water bu alo, gira e, zebra and gnus. - There are also many bird and marine species. BOTSWANA Okavango Delta The Okavango Delta is a network of lagoons, lakes, waterways, and Okavango islands that form the largest inland delta and bird sanctuary in the world. Delta There are many hotels, lodges, tented camps and self-catering accomodation facilities in the area. Why a tourist attraction? - Famous for safaris and wildlife viewing. - Some species that live in the area are the Big Five, the lechwe, the Pel’s fishing owl and Wild dogs. - In the summer migratory bird species come to the area. Activities: Bush walks Night drives Elephant-back safaris Helicopter flights Fishing The Tsodilo Hills The - The Tsodilo Hills area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Tsodilo - It is a remote area about 50km south-west of Shakawe, accesible by 4x4 vehicle. Hills - There are no shops or accomodation facilities in the area, so tourist have to take their own supplies and camping equipment. Why a tourist attraction? - There are four hills that make up Tsodilo hills. - Caves in these hills have rock art and other archaeological evidence of human activity in the area. Activities Hambukushu and San people act as guides. Good for cultural tourism. But the country has many natural resources. It also has 5 UNESCO World heritage sites, but they are in Danger because there are conditions threatening the existence of the site that need corrective action DRC Virunga National Park Virunga National Park - Virunga National Park, or Parc Nacional des Virunga, is located along the Rwandan border. Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa. Popular destination for backpackers and gap year travellers because it o ers natural beauty, rich flora and fauna and an interesting prehistoric and cultural heritage. It takes about 9hours to hike there, tourist should have a guide and a good map, and the proper equipment. MADAGASCAR Royal Hills of Ambohimanga Royal hills of The Royal Hills of Abohimanga is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Anbohimanga It is one of the sacred hills that surround the capital Antananarivo and is about 20km from the city. Why a tourist attraction? The site contains the ruins of a city, the burial sites of Madagascan royalty and a historic museum. Many pilgrims go to the site to worship. It is famous for its beaches, lagoons, coral reefs and scenic villages.
