IMOGENE KING Based on overall assumption that the focus of nursing is human beings interacting with their environment leading to a state of health for individuals, which is ability to function in social roles Graduated from St John’s Hospital School of Nursing in St Louis Missouri-Diploma in Nursing (1945) St Louis University-BSN ( 1948) Same school- MSN (1957) Teacher’s College –Doctor of Education ( 1961) Held a variety of positions: Staff nursing Educational Research and administrative roles Research consultant Professor –University of South Florida College of Nursing An observable behavior found in the health care systems in society Goal is to help individuals maintain their health so they can function in their roles Interpersonal process of action,reaction, interaction and transaction The process of human transactions with environment Organizing, interpreting and transforming information from sensory data and memory A process of perception and communication between person and environment and between person and person represented by verbal and non verbal behaviors that are global directed A process of interactions in which human beings communicate with the environment to achieve goals that are valued; transactions are goal-directed human behaviors Individuals are spiritual beings Individuals have the capacity to think, know, make choices and select alternative course of action Individuals have the ability to record their history and preserve their culture Individuals are open system in transaction with the environment Individuals are unique and holistic, are of intrinsic worth and capable of rational thinking and decision making in most situations Individuals differ in their needs, wants and goals Implies continuous adjustment to stress in the internal and external environment through optimum use of one’s resources to achieve maximum potential for daily living Adjustment to life and health are influenced by an individual’s interaction with environment Nurse and patient are purposeful interacting systems Nurse and client perceptions, judgments and actions if congruent, leads to goal directed transactions If perceptual accuracy is present in nurse-client interactions, transactions will occur If nurse and client makes transactions, goals will be attained If goals are attained, satisfactions will occur If goals are attained, effective nursing care will occur If transactions are made in nurse client interactions, growth and development will be enhanced If role expectations and role performance as perceived by nurse and client are congruent, transactions will occur If role conflict is experienced by nurse and client or both, stress in nurse-client interactions will occur If nurses with special knowledge and skills communicate appropriate information to clients, mutual goal setting and goal attainment will occur
