HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: SAFETY GUIDELINES – 002 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Apparatus Emissions Revision: 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE To reduce the effects of exhaust emissions on the health of station personnel. All company officers and involved firefighters are responsible to adhere to this guideline: All diesel and gasoline apparatus shall be properly connected to station exhaust recovery systems whenever the apparatus and station exhaust systems are operational. With the exhaust system connected and operating, daily pump tests (exercise caution when completing a pump test while connected to avoid overheating the exhaust system) and other related activities can be completed with the vehicle located inside the apparatus bay. If the apparatus cannot be properly connected to a station exhaust system, the apparatus will be pulled out of the station whenever the vehicle is started. This guideline is to be followed no matter what the outside weather conditions are. Remember: If you start, pull it out!! POLICY PROCEDURE A. IN QUARTERS Prior to a vehicle being started, ensure that the exhaust hose is connected to the apparatus. B. RESPONDING FROM QUARTERS When leaving quarters, the driver is to slowly pull the vehicle from the apparatus bay onto the ramp, watching the rear-view mirror for disconnection of the exhaust hose. 1 C. RETURNING TO QUARTERS After backing the apparatus into the apparatus bay, the vehicle will be shut off, and the exhaust system connected to the vehicle exhaust pipe using the apparatus mounted magnet.
