HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: Equipment Guidelines – 007 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Gas Alert Quattro Revision: 3 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 3 PURPOSE POLICY PROCEDURE A. INSPECTIONS 1. Daily inspection An inspection of the Gas Alert Quattro monitor will be completed on a daily basis by the apparatus operator (for the apparatus with the assigned monitor). The daily inspection guidelines are as follows: a. Remove the monitor from its storage case. In fresh air, turn the monitor on (by pressing the on/off mode button until the first “beep” is heard. The monitor will go through a warm-up period and a self-check. b. After its warm-up and self-check are completed, look at the battery indicator (bottom display) to ensure that the battery is operating for the monitor. c. Clear the peak hold readings. To clear the peak hold readings, double tap the on/off button. Cycle through the screens by pressing the on/off button until you reach the Hold to reset peaks, TWA, STEL screen, once at the Hold to reset peaks screen, press and hold the on/off button until the check mark appears. You should have zeros for all the sensors with the exception of the oxygen (oxygen should read approximately 21.0%). If you do not get these numbers, repeat the step (clear peak hold readings). 1 d. If at any time you missed a step, wait and the monitor will default back to the monitoring screen. Once it returns to the monitoring screen, you can start again. The monitor can be turned off by pressing the on/off mode button until the monitor turns off. Once inspected or used, the monitor must be returned to its storage case. The guidelines for clearing the peak hold readings must be completed each time the monitor has been used. 2. Functional bump test A functional bump test is performed to make sure the sensors are properly operating prior to use. Prior to each incident a functional bump test will be performed to ensure proper sensor operation. a. To perform the functional bump test, take the bump gas bottle and attachment hose out of the monitor case. Place the cover over the sensor housing and tighten the screw. Squeeze the trigger on the bump gas bottle (approximately 5 seconds) until the monitor alarms. Once the monitor alarms check the display to make sure all the sensors have a positive reading to ensure proper sensor function. b. After completion of the functional bump test, (prior to entry) the peak holds need to be cleared. B. BATTERY CHANGES In addition to completing daily inspections, fire department personnel are expected to complete the changing of batteries (whenever the battery indictor shows a weak battery level). The battery changing guidelines are as follows: 1. Remove the monitor from its storage case. Turn the monitor over and remove the battery case cover using the supplied tool. Loosen the screw in the middle of the monitor. 2. Remove the battery holder by sliding up the black latch that the screw is in. Once the case is removed, replace all three batteries (AA) using the three spare batteries found in the storage case. 2 3. After changing the batteries, return the battery case cover to the original locations. After the installation has been completed, look at the battery indicator to ensure that the battery is operating for the monitor. The indicator is located at the bottom of the display screen. 4. Complete a work order to the Hazardous Materials Division, communicating that the spare batteries have been used. C. USE AND MAINTAINENCE The Gas Alert Quattro atmospheric monitor should be used whenever a poor air quality is expected or suspected. The monitor will be inspected and bump tested prior to its use. In the event that the monitor is not functioning properly or fails the functional bump test, the monitor will be taken out of service, sent to the Hazard Materials Coordinator, and a work order completed to the Hazardous Materials Division. No other activities should be completed by fire department personnel except the tasks described in the daily and functional bump test guidelines, along with changing the monitors’ batteries. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to make repairs (unless properly trained and authorized by the Hazardous Materials Coordinator). EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES DEFINITIONS End of Document 3
