Pulmonary Embolism A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot forms in a vein in another part of the body — usually in the legs or pelvis — and travels to and lodges in an artery of the lung, stopping blood flow. Without proper blood flow, tissue dies. Signs and symptoms of a pulmonary embolism: » Sudden, sharp chest pain that begins or worsens with a deep breath or a cough, often accompanied by shortness of breath « Sudden, unexplained shortness of breath, even without pain - Cough that may produce blood-streaked sputum (coughed up saliva or mucus) * Rapid heartbeat » Anxiety and excessive perspiration As with a suspected heart attack, dial 911 or call for EM assistance immediately. Pneumonia with Pleurisy According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of pneumonia are chest pains with chills, fever, and a cough that may produce bloody or foul-smelling sputum.
