NONVERBAL CUES Speaking is a combination of verbal and nonverbal expressions. Nonverbal cues include body language and paralanguage, which are also essential in delivering speech. Two Types: 1. Body Language 2. Paralanguage Body Language: Posture Facial expressions Gestures Eye contact POSTURE/ BODY STANCE Speaking position of your body GESTURE A specific body movement that reinforces a verbal message. Most common gestures are made with the hand and arms. Facial Expression The movement of the eyes, mouth, and facial muscles to express emotion. EYE CONTACT It can establish connection with the audience Paralanguage: Volume Projection Pitch Stress VOLUME AND PROJECTION Objectives Note the volume and projection of a speaker’s voice; and Demonstrate proper volume and projection in delivering a short speech VOLUME The loudness or softness of one’s voice. PROJECTION The process of adjusting one’s voice in addressing the listeners. “TIPS ON HOW TO PROJECT YOUR VOICE” 1. Speak louder (or softer as appropriate) to emphasize important words or details. 2. Change the volume of your voice to mirror emotional content. 3. Start and finish loud. PITCH AND STRESS Objectives Demonstrate proper use of pitch and stress in delivering lines PITCH The lowness or highness of tone. STRESS The strength of emphasis to given to a syllable in a word or to a word in a sentence. “Taking note of the pitch and stress of a speaker helps you recognize the most relevant point emphasized in a speech.” Thank You!
