Primary Health Care (PHC) Lecture 2 Health Care system in KSA Health Care System in KSA • Ministry of Health (MOH). • Other Governmental Bodies. • Private Sector. Current Health Care Services • Ministry of Health 60% • Other government bodies 20% • Private sector 20% Saudi MOH • The first public health department was established in 1925 in Mecca during the reign of King Abdulaziz. • Ministry of Health (MOH), was established in 1950. • In 1980, a ministerial decree was issued to establish PHC centers. • There are primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care system in KSA. • Proper referral system declined the burden on secondary and tertiary centers. Responsibilities of MOH • Planning, formulating and managing health policies and supervising health programs. • Monitoring health services in the private sector. • Advising other government agencies and the private sector on ways to achieve the government’s health objectives. Health Directorates • The MOH supervises 20 regional directorates of health affairs in various parts of the country. • Each regional health directorate has a number of hospitals and health sectors. • Every health sector supervises a number of PHC centers. Saudi MOH Statistics (2020) • • • • • • • • Total MOH hospitals: 287 (45,180 beds).
