Earth’s Subsystems CALAMBA CITY INTEGRATED SCIENCE SCHOOL Chipeco Avenue, Brgy. 3, Calamba City, Laguna 4027 EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS ❑ Earth is a complex system of interrelating physical, chemical and biological processes. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success ATMOSPHERE ❑ Serves as the Earth’s blanket. ❑ Rooted from the Greek words atmos which means “gas” and sphaira which means “globe” or “ball’. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success The Moon and Earth's atmosphere ISS030-E-031275 (8 Jan. 2012) ATMOSPHERE ❑ The air in the atmosphere is generally composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon and the remaining 0.10% is made up of different trace gases and vapor. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success ATMOSPHERE ❑ The amount of gases in the atmosphere decreases as the altitude increases. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success ATMOSPHERE ❑Imagine you are about to skydive. At what layer should you jump? Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success ATMOSPHERE ❑ The atmosphere is composed of layers namely: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success Why is the sky blue? Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success GEOSPHERE ❑ Comes from the Greek word geos meaning ground. ❑ It pertains to the solid part of the earth that is divided into three layers: the crust, mantle and the core. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success GEOSPHERE ❑ It comprises the geologic landforms such as mountains and hills. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success GEOSPHERE ❑ Composed of naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals, organic material or natural glass called rocks. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success Mount Makiling Photo from https://calambacity.gov.ph/ HYDROSPHERE ❑ Composed of all the water on Earth in any form. ❑ Came from the Greek word hydro which means “water”. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success HYDROSPHERE ❑ Another part of this subsystem is the permanently frozen parts called cryosphere. BIOSPHERE ❑ Comes from the Greek word bios meaning “life”. ❑ Composed of all living things and the areas where they are found. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success BIOSPHERE ❑ It extends from the deep parts of the oceans where marine organisms can still survive to the upper areas of the atmosphere where insects and birds can be found. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success BIOSPHERE ❑ The interaction between the different subsystems is most dynamic in this zone. ❑ Each organism plays an important role in the food web. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS ❑ The processes that move matter and energy from one sphere to another is termed as sphere interactions. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS ❑ Changes in any sphere greatly affect the other spheres ❑ The spheres are interconnected system. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success EARTH’S SUBSYSTEMS ❑ The four subsystems are closely linked through the biogeochemical cycles which involves biological, geochemical and chemical factors. Calibrating through Commitment and Integrity, Soaring high in Success Thank you! CALAMBA CITY INTEGRATED SCIENCE SCHOOL Chipeco Avenue, Brgy. 3, Calamba City, Laguna 4027
