HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: RESPONSE GUIDELINES – 017 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Brush Fire (BRUSH) Revision: 5 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE The purpose of this guideline is to provide standardized and predetermined responses to all incidents classified as a Brush Fire (BRUSH) by Northwest Central Dispatch (NWCD). POLICY It shall be the policy of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department to follow this guideline. However, it may be altered to achieve a more appropriate response based on information received from NWCD or to achieve a faster response based on location and/or status of fire department apparatus and personnel. PROCEDURE Within the HEFD jurisdiction: For an incident that requires a larger response than the originally dispatched Code 2, the following response will be followed upon requesting an upgrade to a Brush Fire (BRUSH): A. When a Brush Fire response is requested, Brush 24 (towed by TRT24) and Battalion 6 will respond. B. If Command requests the incident be upgraded from the Code 2 or Brush Fire response to a Code 4 or MABAS Box, NWCD will balance out the call to include all apparatus from the first call type to the final call type. Within the Hoffman Estates jurisdiction: For all Brush 24 responses within Hoffman Estates, Brush 24 (towed by TRT24) will be brought to the scene by the crew from A24. The Shift Commander will determine how to best adjust staffing at Station 24 based on availability and qualifications of remaining personnel. 1 Outside the HEFD jurisdiction (Mutual Aid/Box Alarms): BT24 shall respond with a minimum of two personnel to the dispatched report of the need for BT24 for mutual aid or a MABAS Box Alarm. Staffing for the apparatus shall be the Officer and Driver/Operator of Engine 24. E24 Jump 1 will remain at Station 24. The Shift Commander will determine how to best adjust staffing at Station 24 based on availability and qualifications of remaining personnel. If necessary, the Shift Commander may initiate a callback for staffing per Response Guideline – 016. DEFINITIONS NWCD will not initiate an incident with this code. This code is to elevate a Code 2 for Fire Departments that have areas that may be affected by large brush fires. EXCEPTIONS Where MABAS Illinois Policies and Procedures current online reference or MABAS 1 Operating Guidelines/Policy Statements are in conflict with HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines, HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines will take precedence.
