Biodiversity and the Healthy Society Module 10 November 9, OM SLIDESMANIA.C 2022 What is Biodiversity? OM SLIDESMANIA.C Biodiversity It is defined as the vast variety of life forms in the entire earth. It then compasses all kinds of life forms from the single celled organism to the largest multi-celled organisms. Plants, animals and other microorganisms OM SLIDESMANIA.C SLIDESMANIA.C OM SLIDESMANIA.C OM SLIDESMANIA.C OM SLIDESMANIA.C OM SLIDESMANIA.C OM SLIDESMANIA.C OM Decrease in biodiversity is eminent worldwide. The World Wide Fund for Nature and Zoological Society of London reported an annual decrease in wildlife by 2%. A major cause is human population which has doubled in numbers since 1960 to 7.4 billion. Humans have industrialized the natural habitat of wildlife as well as marine life OM SLIDESMANIA.C leaving these creatures with no place to live would eventually cause their deaths. Marco Lambertini described that the disappearance of wildlife is at an unprecedented rate. Earth might enter the 6th mass extinction event according to experts. Mass extinction is described as a disappearance of species at a rate of 1000 faster than usual. The Marco Lambertini disappearance of species in a certain environment causes an imbalance in the OM SLIDESMANIA.C ecosystem producing more chaotic changes that harm the entire ecosystem. Biodiversity and Ecosystem OM SLIDESMANIA.C Biodiversity is the source of essential goods and ecological services that constitute the source of life for all and it has direct consumptive value in food, agriculture, medicine, and in industry. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Human inhabitants of the ecosystem must preserve and conserve the biodiversity of all creatures. In simple terms it is true that people will always depend on biodiversity on the wholesomeness of our being and in our everyday lives. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Threats to Biodiversity OM SLIDESMANIA.C Major threats to biodiversity 1. Habitat loss and destruction 2. Alterations in ecosystem composition 3. Overexploitation 4. Pollution and contamination OM SLIDESMANIA.C 5. Global climate change Nutritional Impact of Biodiversity OM SLIDESMANIA.C According to the World Health Organization biodiversity is a vital element of a human being's nutrition because of its influence on food production. Biodiversity is a major factor that contributes to sustainable food production for human beings a society or a population must have access to a sufficient variety of nutritious foods as it is a determinant of their health as OM SLIDESMANIA.C human beings. Environment related illnesses OM SLIDESMANIA.C Some human illnesses that are found to be related with its environment include Parkinson's disease, heart disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, malaria and depression. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Environmental hazards increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and many other illnesses. These hazards can be physical such as pollution, toxic chemicals, and food contaminants. With the current biodiversity loss at an unpredictable rate the delicate balance between human health and biological diversity is at risk OM SLIDESMANIA.C Many of the issues at the intersection of health and the environment have to do with managing benefits and risk: Example: Pesticides play an important role in increasing crop yields but they can also pose bad side effects to human health and the environment. Energy production is used to sustain human life but it can also pose bad side effects to human health and the OM SLIDESMANIA.C environment. Managing benefits and risk also raises social justice concerns. Example: People with lower socioeconomic status have greater exposure to certain harmful environmental conditions.
