PROCEDURE FOR FIRES IN POST OFFICE PROPERTY OR POSTAL COLLECTION BOXES The recommended extinguishing agent for mail matter is Carbon Dioxide or Dry powder, if at all possible. Water will have an extremely damaging effect on mail matter and should be used ONLY if necessary. However, use of water on the exterior of a collection box may be desired to reduce the interior temperature. If water must be used to extinguish fires in Post Offices or in Post Office property, every effort should be made to protect the mail from water damage by the use of salvage covers. If the contents of a Postal Installation are removed from the original structure, they should be placed under guard until the proper Postal Authority arrives on the scene. The Fire Central Information Office (FCIO) will then report the situation to the Postal Police Central Office. This number is manned 24 hours a day and will initiate an emergency response to the incident location. Edited: 1/12/09
