Sales BUCSSP, Daraga, Albay PROFESSION: INTRODUCTION DEFINITIONS AND LEGAL MANDATES  GLOBAL DEFINITION OF SOCIAL WORK BY IASSW AND IFSW: Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect for diversity are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities, and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance well-being. Social work is a profession, which is primarily concerned with organized social service activity aimed to facilitate and strengthen basic social relationships and the mutual adjustment between individuals and their social environment for the good of the individual and of society (republic act no. 4373 – an act to regulate the practice of social work and the operation of social work agencies in the philippines and for other purposes) by use of social work methods (amendment through republic act no. 5175 in 1967)  REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10847 Lowering the age requirement for applicants taking the board examination for social workers, providing for continuing social work education, and upgrading the sundry provisions relative to the practice of social work (May 23, 2016) 5  1987 PHIL. CONSTITUTION SECTION 9. CONSTITUTION SECTION 13. The State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation- building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. CONSTITUTION SECTION 18. The State affirms labor as a primary social economic force. It shall protect the rights of workers and promote their welfare. SECTION 20. The State recognizes the indispensable role of the private sector, encourages private enterprise, and provides incentives to needed investments. SECTION 22. The State recognizes and promotes the rights of indigenous cultural communities within the framework of national unity and development. SECTION 23. The State shall encourage non-governmental, community- based, or sectoral organizations that promote the welfare of the nation. SECTION 26. The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law. 8 Profession concerned with man’s adjustment to his environment or a person’s social functioning (Mendoza, 2022) Professional service that uses scientific knowledge and skills as bases for engaging people in problem-solving (Mendoza, 2022)  SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE Requires knowledge of human development and behavior; of social, economic, and cultural institutions; and the interaction of these factors Professional application of social work values, principles, and techniques to one or more of the following ends: a. Helping people obtain tangible services b. Providing counseling and psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups c. Helping communities or groups provide or improve social and health services d.
