THINKING QUESTION 1:To TRULY colonize the land, whatshould Spain do? Send people! SOLUTION:Spain decided to buildmissionsandpresidiosall across Tejas to: 1. Gaincolonizeover ALL of Tejas 2. Willing:Puebloan Culture Hostile:Plains Culture Different Motives Some native cultures, such as thePuebloanCulture joined the Spanish mission systemwillinglybecause theywere struggling. They needed food,water, and supplies. However, other native cultures, such as thePlainsCulture were forcedto join the Spanish mission system by the Spanishfriars and soldiers. They would laterrevoltbecause of theirwarrior mentality. 6 Instead of trying to findgoldin Tejas, Spain was now interested in spreading theirreligion(Catholicism) to try to gain controlof Tejas. Problems with the Mission-Presidio System: DISTANCE: Presidios were supposed toprotectthe missions,but they were too FAR AWAY. This allowed for more attacks from enemies. DISEASE:Germsspread quickly at missions, causingdisease to spread. Plus, doctors were scarce then. DEBT: Spain was funding the missions by sendingmoneyto Mexico City. Natives would attack the messengers sending the money to Tejas, so the money wouldneverend up getting to the Tejas missions. DISINTEREST: Natives usually only joined the mission-presidiosystem for protectionand food. They ended up not staying becausethey werenot interestedin conforming to the Spanish culture. Empresarios:(LT 4) After the mission system failed, New Spain’s new plan tocolonizeTejas was theempresariosystem. Empresarios were land agents who broughtAnglo-American settlers from theU.S.toTejas. Mexican empresarios focused on bringingMexicansettlersto Tejas. This was apopularsystem because Mexico can finallycolonize Tejas, AND Anglo-American settlers got land for a verycheapprice. Moses Austin:(LT 4) Moses Austinwas thefirstempresario to start the process of bringing Anglo-Americans to Tejas. 10 He finally got permission fromSpainto bring Anglo-American settlersto Tejas. Sadly though, hediedbefore he could actuallycarryouthis empresario plan to help colonize Tejas. His dying wish was that his son,Stephen F. Austin,would carry out his empresario plan.
