Natives had to…‬ ‭1.‬ ‭Become‬‭Catholic‬ ‭2.‬ ‭Learn the‬‭Spanish language‬ ‭3.‬ ‭Protect‬‭New Spain's‬‭land‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 2‬‭:‬‭Which of the Native Cultures‬‭do you think would be the most‬ T ‭WILLING to join the mission system? Which will be the most HOSTILE/aggressive?‬ ‭Willing:‬‭Puebloan Culture‬ ‭Hostile:‬‭Plains Culture‬ ‭Different Motives‬ ‭‬ ‭Some native cultures, such as the‬‭Puebloan‬‭Culture‬ ‭joined‬ ‭the Spanish mission system‬‭willingly‬‭because they‬‭were‬ ‭struggling. They needed food,‬‭water‬‭, and supplies.‬ ‭‬ ‭However, other native cultures, such as the‬‭Plains‬‭Culture were‬ ‭forced‬‭to join the Spanish mission system by the Spanish‬‭friars‬ ‭and soldiers. They would later‬‭revolt‬‭because of their‬‭warrior mentality.‬ ‭6‬ ‭‬ ‭Instead of trying to find‬‭gold‬‭in Tejas, Spain was now interested in spreading‬ ‭their‬‭religion‬‭(Catholicism) to try to gain control‬‭of Tejas.‬ ‭Problems with the Mission-Presidio System:‬ ‭‬ ‭DISTANCE‬‭: Presidios were supposed to‬‭protect‬‭the missions,‬‭but they were‬ ‭too FAR AWAY‬‭. This allowed for more attacks from enemies.‬ ‭‬ ‭DISEASE‬‭:‬‭Germs‬‭spread quickly at missions, causing‬‭disease‬ ‭to spread. Plus, doctors were scarce then.‬ ‭‬ ‭DEBT‬‭: Spain was funding the missions by sending‬‭money‬‭to Mexico City.‬ ‭Natives would attack the messengers sending the money to Tejas, so the money‬ ‭would‬‭never‬‭end up getting to the Tejas missions.‬ ‭‬ ‭DISINTEREST‬‭: Natives usually only joined the mission-presidio‬‭system for‬ ‭protection‬‭and food. They ended up not staying because‬‭they‬ ‭were‬‭not interested‬‭in conforming to the Spanish culture.‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 3‬‭:‬‭Why did the missions and presidios‬‭need to be closer‬ T ‭together?‬‭(*Hint* think about the goal of the presidios!)‬ ‭The presidios were supposed to protect the missions.‬ ‭Circle ONE‬‭: The Spanish Mission-Presidio system was‬‭a... SUCCESS /‬ ‭FAILURE‬ ‭Lasting Spanish Legacy:‬ ‭‬ ‭List three ways in which the Spanish culture has lived on in Tejas:‬ ‭1.‬ ‭Architecture‬ ‭2.‬ ‭Language‬ ‭3.‬ ‭Horses‬ ‭‬ ‭San Antonio de Valero (LT 2)‬ ‭○‬ ‭Nicknamed “The‬‭Alamo‬‭”‬ ‭○‬ ‭Built in‬‭1718‬ ‭7‬ ‭Empresarios & Mexican National Notes‬ ‭1803 - Louisiana Purchase:‬‭(LT 3)‬ ‭‬ ‭U.S. bought the‬‭Louisiana Territory‬‭from‬ ‭France for $‬‭15‬‭million (3 cents per acre)‬ ‭‬ ‭This‬‭doubled‬‭the size of the‬‭U.S.‬ ‭‬ ‭Now the‬‭U.S.‬‭and‬‭New Spain‬‭are neighbors, which leads‬ ‭to‬‭territorial conflict‬‭.‬ ‭1819 - Adams-Onis Treaty:‬‭(LT 3)‬ ‭‬ ‭Created the new‬‭boundary‬‭line between the U.S. and‬ ‭New Spain by establishing the‬‭border‬‭between the two‬‭countries‬ ‭‬ ‭This established‬‭Texas'‬‭modern day northern and eastern‬‭borders‬ ‭and made‬‭Tejas‬‭a part of‬‭New Spain‬‭.‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 4‬‭:‬‭The mission system failed. Why‬‭do you think Spain was having‬ T ‭such a hard time settling Tejas?‬‭(*Hint* look at the‬‭location of Mexico City in comparison to Tejas)‬ ‭ ost people were near the capital city, Mexico City, and didn't want to travel the‬ M ‭long distance to live in Tejas.‬ ‭Empresarios:‬‭(LT 4)‬ ‭‬ ‭After the mission system failed, New Spain’s new plan to‬‭colonize‬‭Tejas‬ ‭was the‬‭empresario‬‭system.‬ ‭‬ ‭Empresarios were land agents who brought‬‭Anglo-American‬ ‭settlers from the‬‭U.S.‬‭to‬‭Tejas‬‭.‬ ‭‬ ‭Mexican empresarios focused on bringing‬‭Mexican‬‭settlers‬‭to Tejas.‬ ‭‬ ‭This was a‬‭popular‬‭system because Mexico can finally‬‭colonize‬ ‭Tejas, AND Anglo-American settlers got land for a very‬‭cheap‬‭price.‬ ‭Moses Austin:‬‭(LT 4)‬ ‭‬ ‭Moses Austin‬‭was the‬‭first‬‭empresario to start the‬ ‭process of bringing Anglo-Americans to Tejas.‬ ‭10‬ ‭‬ ‭He finally got permission from‬‭Spain‬‭to bring Anglo-American‬ ‭settlers‬‭to Tejas.‬ ‭‬ ‭Sadly though, he‬‭died‬‭before he could actually‬‭carry‬‭out‬‭his‬ ‭empresario plan to help colonize Tejas.‬ ‭‬ ‭His dying wish was that his son,‬‭Stephen F. Austin‬‭,‬‭would‬ ‭carry out his empresario plan.‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 5‬‭:‬‭What issues could arise when‬‭one country is trying to control‬ T ‭another country from a different continent?‬ ‭Answers will vary. Ex: Not having a voice in the government‬ ‭New Spain began to revolt because they were upset about...‬ ‭(LT 5)‬ ‭1.‬ ‭Spain's‬‭government‬ ‭2.‬ ‭Spain's‬‭social class rank‬‭system‬ ‭3.‬ ‭Unfair‬‭taxes‬ ‭1821 - Mexican Independence:‬‭(LT 5)‬ ‭‬ ‭New Spain gained their‬‭independence‬‭from‬‭Spain‬ ‭and became the new country of‬‭Mexico‬‭.‬ ‭‬ ‭Now‬‭Tejas‬‭is under‬‭Mexican‬‭rule - not Spanish.‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 6‬‭:‬‭Which country (France, Spain,‬‭or Mexico), do you believe has‬ T ‭had the most legitimate (true/valid) claim to Tejas? EXPLAIN!‬ ‭ nswers will vary. Ex: I think Spain had the most legitimate claim to Tejas because‬ A ‭they made the empresario system, which was effective in colonizing Tejas.‬ ‭Mexican Empresario System:‬‭(LT 6)‬ ‭‬ ‭The empresario system had become extremely‬‭successful‬ ‭under Spain’s leadership.‬ ‭‬ ‭So once independent,‬‭Mexico‬‭took over the‬‭empresario‬ ‭system and kept it going.‬ ‭11‬ ‭‬ ‭Stephen F. Austin:‬‭(LT 6)‬ ‭○‬ ‭SFA finally got new permission from‬‭Mexico‬‭to bring‬‭Anglo-‬ ‭Americans to‬‭Tejas‬‭in 1821.‬ ‭○‬ ‭Most‬‭famous‬‭empresario because he was actually able‬‭to‬ ‭carry out‬‭his father’s plan to begin the empresario‬‭system‬ ‭‬ ‭Other well-known empresarios:‬ ‭○‬ ‭Martin de‬‭Leon‬ ‭○‬ ‭Green‬‭DeWitt‬ ‭○‬ ‭Erasmo‬‭Seguin‬ ‭○‬ ‭Haden‬‭Edwards‬ ‭ ROCESSING ACTIVITY 1‬‭:‬‭Sort the following descriptions‬‭into their correct location, depending‬ P ‭on if it describes the mission system, the empresario system, or both.‬ ‭12‬ ‭THINKING QUESTION 7‬‭:‬‭Why do countries need constitutions?‬ ‭Answers will vary. Ex: To keep and establish order, leadership, rules, etc.‬ ‭1824 - Mexican Constitution:‬‭(LT 8)‬ ‭‬ ‭Federalist‬‭Constitution: power is‬‭shared‬‭between the‬ ‭national /‬‭federal‬‭government and the‬‭states‬‭.‬ ‭‬ ‭Anglo-Americans‬‭liked‬‭this because the‬‭U.S.‬‭Constitution‬‭was also a‬ ‭Federalist Constitution.‬ ‭‬ ‭Combined‬‭Coahuila y Tejas‬‭into one Mexican state‬ ‭‬ ‭Colonization Laws of 1825:‬‭(LT 9)‬ ‭○‬ ‭No‬‭taxes‬‭for 10 years 😊‬ ‭○‬ ‭Slavery‬‭allowed‬‭in‬‭Tejas‬‭but illegal in all other‬ ‭Mexican states (legal in the U.S.) 😊‬ ‭○‬ ‭People in Tejas could not live within‬‭60 miles of‬‭the U.S. border‬‭😟‬ ‭○‬ ‭Must be of good,‬‭moral‬‭character‬‭😟‬ ‭○‬ ‭Must become‬‭Catholic‬‭😟‬ ‭○‬ ‭Must become a‬‭Mexican citizen‬‭😟‬ ‭○‬ ‭Must join the‬‭Mexican militia‬‭😟‬ ‭THINKING QUESTION 8‬‭:‬‭What was the‬‭main‬‭goal of these‬‭colonization laws?‬ ‭ o make limit American influence on the new settlers and make sure the‬ T ‭Anglo-American settlers were "acting Mexican"‬ ‭PROCESSING ACTIVITY 2:‬‭Do the following on the Colonization‬‭Laws above.‬ ‭Draw a SMILEY FACE next to the laws you think the U.S. settlers LIKED!‬ ‭Draw a FROWNY FACE next to the laws you think the U.S. settlers DISLIKED.‬ ‭13‬ ‭Cultural Differences:‬‭(LT 10)‬ ‭‬ ‭Causes:‬ ‭○‬ ‭Distance‬‭- American settlers lived very far away from‬ ‭Mexicans (Anglo-Americans in Northeast Tejas, Mexicans in South Tejas)‬ ‭○‬ ‭Freedom‬‭- Mexico did not enforce their laws in‬ ‭Anglo-American-settled areas of Tejas, so Anglo-Americans were free to do‬ ‭what they wanted‬ ‭So‬‭cultural differences‬‭began forming in the following‬‭areas:‬ ‭Areas‬ ‭Mexican POV‬ ‭Anglo-American POV‬ ‭Language‬ ‭Spanish‬ ‭English‬ ‭Slavery‬ ‭Illegal‬ ‭Legal‬ ‭Religion‬ ‭Catholicism‬ ‭Freedom of religion‬ ‭ HINKING QUESTION 9‬‭:‬‭Why did the Mexican government‬‭allow so many Americans to‬ T ‭come to Mexico, even though they had different beliefs on almost everything?‬ ‭ nswers will vary. Ex: They were desperate to settle Tejas and would do anything to‬ A ‭bring people there, even compromise on things they believed in.‬ ‭‬ ‭Effects:‬ ‭○‬ ‭Anglo-Americans in Tejas still identified more with the‬‭American‬ ‭culture instead of the Mexican culture.‬ ‭○‬ ‭These‬‭cultural differences‬‭will eventually lead to‬ ‭Tejas wanting their‬‭independence‬‭from Mexico.‬ ‭14‬
